Getting to fastpath

I've been really antsy to get my dsl back on fastpath. Long ago (maybe 2003-2004?) my first hop on earthlink dsl was 30ms. At some point since then it jumped up to 60ms. When i switched to sonic.net they originally started the line on fastpath but the modem was reporting thousands of CRC errors.

The line stats I have available are very limited on this modem:
noise margin upstream: 13 db
output power downstream: 15 db
attenuation upstream: 31 db

noise margin downstream: 10 db
output power upstream: 11 db
attenuation downstream: 63 db

Link Status: Up
Upstream Speed: 384 kbps
Downstream Speed: 768 kbps

Node-Link Status TxPkts RxPkts Errors Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
1-1483 UP 12350642 9904730 0 70 70 181:02:37

Interface Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions
Ethernet 100M/Full Duplex 9913951 12358618 0

the attenuation of 63db is really killer. Anyone know why this is so high? Im in a townhouse and it only has 3 devices connected to the phone line, the modem (ZyXEL P-600), a phone, and an answering machine.

I've ran the modem without the phone or answering machine connected and it had virtually no effect. Would I need to call AT&T or something to get this fixed?

Sonic is much more helpful at looking at this. I'd call them first and make sure it isn't some problem with them. They'll call AT&T if there is an issue with the lines.

FWIW, my first hops are under 10ms.

Socoast, I looked at your line stats as measured from the AT&T DSLAM. It looks like you are at the far end of your run which would account for the high Db. It needs to generate enough noise to reach the modem and vice versa. The line is running clean as far as errors on the connection go. There is a minor indicator the modem may be part of the issue but its not likely. You may see a different ping response to sites as AT&T has your connection set on what is referred to as 'interleave' or automatic error correction. This tends to result in higher ping times. It does not appear the line will be more stable on the fast profile. I hope this answers some questions. If you have concerns feel free to msg me.

Have a great day!

I'm just curious if my line can handle fastpath or not. I'll call tomorrow and have them switch it and see how long that lasts. Thanks for the replies, i'll post back with my results.

So i called up and had my dsl switched to fastpath in literally about 1 minute. Gotta love sonic.net 3. Seems stable enough after about 1hr of gaming with about 50ms lower ping .

All the line stats I posted havent really changed except for a maybe 1db decrease in noise margin. Still 0 errors which is great news too.

I have a theory on this. I think when I first signed up they were syncing me at about twice the speed its set to right now and it coincidentally was on fastpath but we switched both the sync and turned on interleave at the same time.
