| Internet for a rural area.
Hi, I currently use WildBlue Satellite internet, but I'm trying to find an alternative to it.
Everyone in the house uses the internet for their own reasons. Gaming, Work, Socializing, Watching Videos, and Email.
Then soon enough, the bandwidth threshold is already exceeded, and the connection becomes very slow.
So, I was wondering.
How much it would cost to pay the local cable company to lay cable coax around 4-5 miles from the nearest local town.

Without knowing the ISP involved or your location let me generalize your cost at $15,000 per mile of new cable. This usually makes it clear that new cable is not a choice.

There is rumor of a Wireless ISP centered in Cobb, so if you are rural near there it would be worth looking into.
Verizon (ex-GTE) has a DSL capable CO on 301 W DIVISION ST. , also one in Mineral Point on 102 N CHESTNUT ST, in case 'rural' is southwest of town, DSL may be available all the way to Mineral Point. Generally DSL is available within 18,000 feet of a CO as the wire runs.
As for cell phone Wireless broadband, Verizon is good, except southeast of town it gets spotty. AT&T is useless, as is Sprint.

Hello, I am also currently living in a rural area and, at the speeds i need (dsl speeds at minimum) satellite internet would cost $100 + a month. NOT AN OPTION I have Verizon cell service, and Verizon home service,, southern Indiana, zip 47023. Talking to installer putting in phone line about a year ago said the since I live less than a mile from a verizon substation I would have DSL as soon as it was updated,, over a year,, its not been done yet.
Any way to contact someone at Verizon about this or any other ideas from anyone.. other than internet for work for me and the wife, it would be great.. kids want some gaming too.. any help would be greatly appreciated,, please email me anytime. |

| YES, I have good wireless coverage. but don't wireless aircards have to much latency for a lot of work purposes,, not to mention video gameplay for the kids and I? because of latency concerns i think my only soution would be DSL or cable correct? and im trying to find out who to talk to, or what to do about that. thanks |

Satellite has major latency issues. It is traveling at least 44,000 miles both ways (4 times through space) for each ping. 500 msecs is about the minimum, I often see 3 times that.
By comparison, terrestrial wireless is fine. Minor delays due to conversions may double 'first hop' pings but should not impact any business use, but may impact 'first person shooter' games a bit.
If moving is a choice, yes both DSL and Cable are better.
ISDN is normally a pain to set up but has good Ping, just low throughput.
