| [Off Topic] getting to know everyone?
in an effort to maybe personalize the forum, would anyone object to a "getting to know you" type of thread? maybe what you do professionally, what drew you to dslr, maybe a name or so. just a thought.

| i guess i will start.
my name is quinn (as you could glean from my profile). i'm a network engineer, working mostly with cisco gears in the enterprise. i specialize in network security and wireless, though i can do enough damage in voice to get something working. i've been playing with cisco gear for the better part of 7 years. i have a few certs to show for it and a lot of experience on what to do and what not to do. i am also completing my bsee in electrical engineering; working primarily with microwaves, though i have some experience with fiber optics and feedback control systems. my experience with microwaves has taught me *a lot* about how the coaxial part of the hfc network functions, theoretically. my networking deployment experience has taught me a lot about once the network hits fiber. its a varied background, but i enjoy doing what i do.
i actually joined dslr on a whim - mostly for the cisco forum. i joined the cox forum knowing *nothing* about what is good and bad. i've picked up, learned, and researched what i could in order to help everyone out. i guess thats my main goal - help.

I work in the home theater construction and design field running my own business. I have Cable experience as I worked for Cox before I started my own business. I left the company a little over 4 years ago.
I Found dslr while looking for broadband at my first residence in 1998. Love the place and been here since. |

| reply to tubbynet My nick relates to a little bit of my background, interest and how I ended up here. I studied electronics and was always fascinated with RF. Got a couple FCC licenses along the way (long expired). Got into wireless networking early, even before I had broadband, sharing an Earthlink dial-up connection via ICS and a Linksys router. Found this place by way of another member as he and I were hacking around with some beta firmware.
I've been a Cox HSI subscriber for over 10 years and have found them to be a reliable provider here in Southern California.
The last 35 years have been spent fixing or selling technology - computer systems, software, services. Distractions include Linux, photography and mountain biking.
I was assigned to host this forum as punishment for trolling in the Cooler. |

| reply to tubbynet Name's Daniel (obviously..), i'm 25 and I work as a Network Admin at a Trash Company (you see a pile of trash, i see a pile of money.) | reply to tubbynet My name is Shad and I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I am a long-time reader and member of this site but I tend to do more lurking than posting.
I'm 38 and have been living in Louisiana my whole life basically. I have been living in the Capitol City for over 5 years now and I really like it. I work in the exciting world of State Government and I am married and I have a daughter who is almost 2 years old.
I am pretty boring - I like to watch movies and sports and hang out with my wife and daughter mostly. I suffer from an eye condition known as RP (short for Retinitus Pigmentosa) that causes me to lose my sight little by little peripherally. I tend to use a cane when I am out and about so I don't run into stuff or over people but it's more for convenience and safety since I still have some usable vision. The only thing I am bitter about with my eye condition is not being able to drive.
Given the forum I am posting in I guess I should mention that I have been with COX for many, many, years now and have been, for the most part, extremely satisfied with them. I subscribe to just basic cable and have the Preferred Internet package.
Anyway - CHEERS! and all that stuff. Forgive me for my long-windedness, it's a feature, not a bug. |

3 edits | reply to tubbynet I am one of several server admins for a large eldercare organization (been in current position about 5 years, worked on the helpdesk for 4 years previous). We have a large VMWare installation here supporting over 100 virtualized servers. Help manage a large number of blade servers (HP 460C type), plus various other rack mounted systems. Mainly a Windows shop.
Do tape backups and restores, install server racks and cabling. Troubleshoot server hardware issues and contact appropriate vendors.
Have lived and worked in the Western Arkansas area my entire life. Have been married for almost 12 years with one stepson from my wife's previous marriage.
Found this site while looking for broadband offerings in my local area. Been a satisfied customer ever since. |

| reply to tubbynet Hi, the name's Helen, I joined DSLR in 2000 when I was 17 years old, I was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, and I live in Topeka and Kansas all my life. Well, I'm 26 years old, I like the forums here because of the helpful nature, broadband news, and other things. I really love computers, wireless devices, networking, and anything doing with technology, gadgets, etc. I'm currently in school to finish my 2 year degree in Computer Information Systems - Networking, I will be graduating in early February, and my dream is to be a Network Administrator in five years. I'm willing to start at the bottom of the totem pole at some company so I can work my way up to Network Administrator.
Thanks for reading this

| reply to tubbynet Hello.
My name is Dustin and I have been around DSLR "officially" for 9 years now. I actually found the site in February of 2000 but didn't come back and register until October of that year. I found the site after my dad ditched Charter one-way cable in St. Louis and went with DSL from southwestern bell.
I used to be an active member here on DSLR, but after my dad passed away (age 50) of cancer in 2003, I really stopped being a frequest user here and lost contact with all the friends I had made along the way.
That doesn't mean I don't love dslr without a passion, just means that it hurt too much to come back here. I was a contributing member to TD (team discovery) for awhile, even had my own server farm at work crunching away at data, about 13-14 systems. I bet you if I had the computers we have today, I could have done more damage. Back then we had Pentium 866MHz computers. They considered these new systems where I had worked. Apparently they had been in a warehouse for a year before I was able to install them for the company I had been working for.
As far as what I do, I'm a bofh. |
