What are some of the best gaming mice?

I already know of all the logitech ones, so no need to include those.
Also I tend to dislike the offerings from Razer (I'm not a fan of the main buttons dipping so low as I tend to be a finger tip user rather than palming)

So far my favorite has been the Ideazon Reaper Edge (though it seems discontinued which is why I'm looking around at others) (just to give you an idea of the general shape I like)

It's in stock at Newegg.

I myself have used a MX518, G5, G9, a razer lachesis and a razer deathadder, and i'm sticking with the deathadder, i love the feel and it's just a great overall mouse. The "extra dpi" is usually not needed in most cases.

Visually that looks to be the exact same mouse as the reaper edge o.O

I got the gift of a Razer Lachesis. In Vista AND win7 the cursor jumps to the top of the screen from time to time, a little annoying, and not good for gaming. I don't know if it is the firmware, the driver, or the mouse itself, but other people have been having the same problem from what I have read online.

It's likely the mouse itself. The sensors used to detect mouse movement on a lot of mice appear to "freak out" once in a while. This happened on the Logitech MX3xx series, the MX5xx series, and the first-gen G5. The second-gen G5 doesn't appear to have this problem, nor any of their current mice.

Once you know how optical (laser, etc.) mice work it becomes fairly obvious what the problem is: since they basically take a snapshot of the surface underneath them X times a second and compare it with the previous to see what direction the mouse moves, my guess is that the sensors get back bogus/corrupt data which cause the mouse to think the mouse was moved significantly.

Mice have now succumbed to the mentality which drove the "speed wars" of processors back in the day (remember AMD and Intel fighting over who had higher clock speeds? Retarded), except with mice, it's DPI. I really do not care for a 4000 DPI mouse, or a 2000 DPI mouse, or a 1000 DPI mouse. You don't need that kind of DPI to guarantee smooth movement; extra resolution means jack squat if the mouse is only taking snapshots of the surface, say, 60 times a second.

What I'd really like is for a non-Logitech company to come out with a mouse that feels and tracks identically to that of the MX510, MX518, or G5, and has the exact same button layout (comfortable form factor, two left side buttons horizontally placed, and a notched scroll wheel -- and not one of those new-style Logitech metallic wheels which can be toggled between notched/spun freely. Hate 'em...)

Interesting comments. I wanted a really nice mouse that would be dependable, I am disappointed to be honest. I also don't like the shape of it, I also do not palm my mice. I don't have small hands, but my hands aren't really big either, so I used the finger approach, it is the natural way for me.

Also, I have the shakes. My doctor just put me on Parkinson's medication and it is going to take a while for it to work its magic if it can. Because of this, elevating my arm in the air and palming just is a no go.

The thing has a high hump towards the back of it and then an abrupt bend down. Not at all good unless you have a large hand and palm things. It's too long.

The driver software is cool, the extra buttons are appealing to me, and it switches from resolutions very well.

I don't know if I have Parkinson's, my doctor didn't go into it with me, I hope I don't, but I do have bad shakes which makes life difficult. And to think, I used to work with delicate optics and glass so soft that even a slight brush from the hand would scratch the hell out of them. It was very delicate work and I had steady hands, and this was less than 10 years ago. I am kind of bummed about this condition.

I think I should have asked for the logitech G9 or newer G5.

Do you think having Razer warranty replace this mouse might do any good? There aren't many nine button mice out there, which was the thing that, at the time, I was excited about.

Maybe I'll wait for the new drivers just in case, first...

Well I've decided I'll either go for the HP branded Reaper Edge, or I'll just buy a Reaper Edge elsewhere.

That shape and feel has just been the most ideal I've used.

(only downside I've had is that there's only one button for controlling sensitivity)

Honestly, logitech is the only way to go. I'm going to bring it up anyways. They are the best gaming mice. Period.

The G5 doesn't cost much, and is by far the best mouse on the market. The laser is so good on this mouse that I can use it on a glass table, and it still reads movement just fine. It's shaped good. It has nice anti-slip rubber stuff on it. It has the perfect amount of buttons. The cord is fabric so you can easily position it the way you want. On the fly DPI settings.

Did I mention it costs way less then the competition, or the overpriced G9?

I have a G5, to be honest, I don't really care for it, the material used for the black parts irritates my fingers for some reason.

G5 is going to be replaced by the G500, so you might be able to pick one up for cheap.

The scroll wheels that Logitech has gone with on the G500 and similar models is utter garbage. There is a physical (plastic) lever inside which can be pushed to make the wheel notched or freescrolling. This attributes to the entire wheel feeling loose or wobbly, not secure at all. The horizontal scroll option of the wheel amplifies this feeling, resulting in a wheel that's flopping around like a fish out of water. That's how it feels to me anyway.

I've used two different Logitech mice with that wheel, and the wheel was the main reason I returned it. I prefer rubber track wheels with medium resistance.

Also, I don't know what the hell goes on with mice R&D, but companies need to stop using plastic for the notch mechanics and start using some kind of lightweight and hard metal -- titanium comes to mind. The problem with using plastic is that over time, the notching decreases and becomes less and less uniform as the plastic itself gets worn down. Try a mouse that's been used for 2 years compared to a brand new one; the wheel resistance/tension feel entirely different.

I'd love to recommend Logitech mice to people, but I have quite a list of problems with their mice. The sad part is, the MX310/510/G5 rev 2. shell, button placement, and side button placement fits my hand perfectly and feels wonderful. It's all the above problems + the stuff on my site that keeps me from recommending their products.
