Service Electric 2way/PenTeleData Caps ??

Hey Guys,

I live in Phillipsburg, NJ and noticed the other day the SE techs outside my house working on the boxes all down the road. 3-4 days later I decided to check to see if my current ISP, Earthlink, would be able to upgrade my service. To my dismay, they were not able to offer me anything quicker.

Remembering SE was in the area, I wandered over to their site to see if maybe...just maybe they flicked the little switch and upgraded to 2 way cable internet. Low and behold they did! I jumped on the phone and called them up for additional information. I know how the sites say 1 thing and they say the other. The CSR looked at my info and she said, yes it is indeed available. I said great, I will do some research and give you a call back later on today or tomorrow.

I noticed their high speed agreement and searched online saying that they do bandwidth capping. Currently I have DSL and don't have to worry about this. I called PTD to see what this actually meant. Was it downloading movies, music, etc etc or just web browsing, checking email, or just having my computer on? I talked to someone in tech support and I was told oh no no it's not browsing it's the downloading of movies and all that jazz. Which is fine because I don't download too much. I called the SE csr back and explained what PTD told me and she said yes, that's what I thought it was as well.

I browsed on here some more and saw that people are getting hit with notices, warnings, and even terminations. I have a few questions, and hopefully you guys can help because the installer is coming Tuesday and if this isn't going to work out I definitely need to cancel. I believe I know how much bytes I'm sending and receiving when I'm on but I don't have a tool that tells me for the month. I will be using 2 computers, which are on probably 16 out of the 24 hours of the day, and MAYBE down the road a 3rd computer which wont get more than an hour a day.

As of right now I've been connected(or had the computer on) for 7 hours 37 mins..

Bytes Sent: 56,105,935
Received: 263,181,800

Am I correct in the assumption my receive for that time is about 2gb's?. With my kind of usage, do you guys think I would go over a proposed limit? How much even is their cap? All these answers should be clearly marked on their webpage but are not. I'm just doing my due diligence in researching this before I get it put in.

Any help from you guys would be absolutely fantastic, and even better would be if someone from my area can chime in. I'll check out the thread tomorrow morning...err or later on, if not it won't be until Monday. Thus I tried to be as thorough as possible.

Thanks in advance guys

Ok, so I just called ptd and the guy looked up the cap info and did say the package I was going to be under has a cap both ways of 75gb. I asked if it was general browsing or just having the comp on or dl an filesharing. He said in his opinion if I don't dl movies or anything I should be fine *since the cap doesn't count against general use such as web broswing or checking email etc. I took this with a grain of salt and asked again and he re-affirmed. What's my move from here?

Trix-
Caps only come into play if you're doing 24/7 torrents, downloading GB files all day, etc.

Seriously - my parents and my brothers family have had PTD for years now and have had no issues whatsoever.

install was a breeze. I had a spare cable line still in my room from when i had SE TV. We just used that and hooked up my modem. Installer was here maybe 45 minutes. No difficulties or anything. I'm actually getting better than advertised for a change. 8.5mbps down 1 up and i got the 7mb down/800 up package.

I'll write back in the next week or so about the caps and usage.

I know someone who's been getting PTD notices in the mail off an on for the past 2 years. They never cut them off, they pay the bill that puts food on PTD's table.

PTD haven't heard of Net Neutrality? A cap is a cap, doesn't matter what kind of traffic it is... GB is GB whether it's HTTP traffic or torrent traffic.

Anyway it sounds like you'll be find anyway with those numbers you've provided. But yeah your just doing your due diligence and making sure this is the right move. My opinion is that it IS the right move for you.

It's a bit strange but different Service Electrics have different caps, even though they all use PenTeleData.

Ours for example (SE Broadband cable, Sparta NJ) caps 10M at 60GB and 30M at 100GB. Never heard of it being different for peak/off peak. That must be a new thing.

They have 75/75 for all commercial accounts.
