When I came back, it was on the login screen and I checked and I am still on 10.5.8...I'll try again and see what happens. Also I didn't notice the option to do a clean install instead of an upgrade. That happened to me too on the first installation attempt on my Macbook Pro... not sure what happened...
But it installed fine the second time! |

 | reply to vukodlak75 Nope, I always keep my iMac display brightness at the lowest setting. After doing the 10.5.8 update all of a sudden it would always boot to full brightness, I had seen that I was not the only person experiencing this problem. I would have thought though that installing Snow Leopard would rectify the problem but it has not unfortunately. |

| reply to yanks said by yanks:My Snow Leopard install went without a hitch but surprisingly it did not fix a bug that happened when I had updated to Leopard 10.5.8, since then my iMac would alway boot with the display at full brightness. It's still doing this even after Snow Leopard, bummer. That's more common than you think. My MBP can't decide to boot nearly dimmed out or at full brightness. Does that jig when waking too. Do you ever have the screen go black when pressing the button to dim the screen? e.g. you've booted (or awakened) the machine and it's full brightness, so you press the button to lower it and instead of the progress bar appearing allowing you to darken the screen the screen instead goes full black when you press the button?
Done the applecare reset(s) dance. The 'fix' was "it's really nothing to worry about."

Fix for this is to keep your iMac on the Lowest brightness that isn't zero... in other words, 1 notch above it. For whatever reason, 10.5.8 doesn't remember 0 brightness so it defaults. Set it to 1 notch and it'll remember. A fix is on the way. |

 | Thanks so much for the tip! I set the brightness just a drop more than the lowest setting and it works just like you said. Much better. |

I have the last fast PowerPC G4 and now I'm compelled to buy an Intel! I can't even sleep at night knowing I don 't have the best latest system. I feel like I'm back at system 7 again. Maybe I am??? | reply to J E F F Things I'm finding on my iMac so far:
Both Safari and Mail open quite a bit faster than with Leopard, especially from a cold boot. It's definitely faster going to sleep and coming out of sleep. Shut down is fast but it was with Leopard also, I really don't find it booting up much faster, seems to be about the same as Leopard. |

 | Yeah, I agree with you on all of those statements. |

My Firefox runs great UNLESS i try to use the Help menu, then it crashes - otherwise it's rock solid. To fix your problem, make sure you are running the newest version (3.5.2) and try disabling your Add-ins one-by-one until you find the culprit. |

 | It's likely the individual machine and the add-ons probably aren't helping. I only run one add-on, and I never use it. Hasn't caused me any problems. -- I am the Flying Photog, see my website accordingly named Flyingphotog.com. User known formerly as zakooldude. |

There are some problems Apple is unable to fix, and I'm fairly sure it's a low-level problem related to the HW interface and power management. - |
