| Can you explain to a person who is clueless about the iPhone (that's me), why this is significant? What would this application let an iPhone user do who also subscribes to Vonage? -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin |

Depending what finally gets released - it should allow softphone type capabilities (VoiP) using the iPhone phone interface. This is similar to the recent google voice app which was just blocked by Apple/Att - and GV is not a VoiP app - it uses carrier minutes.
This is big because the FCC is looking at ATT and Apple closely - this just might get approved.
The big part is VoiP calls would use the UNLIMITED iPhone data plan - not ATT Minutes |

AND with something like 25Million iPhones out there ALL with unlimited data plans (no caps for iPhone plans) - Vonage is real smart to go into this....
About the iPhone - I used to not think too much about these - my daughter had one and thought it was cool.... I finally got one when the 3Gs came out a month ago - I cant let the thing go. It is one awsome piece of consumer electronics |

1 edit | reply to dellsweig Could you imagine Vonage with the capabilities of Google Voice? Especialy if hell freezes over and AT&T/Apple actually approves an app that could be used and was not cripled. WOW Vonage would be totally back in the game. I don't have an iPhone but just the thought of Vonage making a Contact Center with the capabilities of Google Voice would make me happy. I bet it would help cure their churn issues too. -- Vonage user since Mar 2004. |

| reply to dellsweig Re: Vonage iPhone App
I'm eager to see what the Vonage app brings. The "in beta testing" and "at a later date" has me hoping that this isn't the same "later date" that Apple makes a decision on Google Voice for the App Store.
Agree with strange_69; it could definitely help their churn. Wall Street already seems to think so. |

No doubt it was approved because the FCC and FTC were watching Apple/ATT.
Details remain - the biggest detail is will it be limited to Wifi or be 3G enabled as well..
This is not going to make the iPhone any cheaper to use - you still need a voice and data plan from ATT BUT it will make me feel better to make VoiP calls. Maybe it would be possible on a "jailbroken" phone to go with a data only plan - not sure of that.
I CANT WAIT!!!!! |

Considering we know AT&T prevents apps that use the data heavily from being approved I would say the chances of this app using the 3g network to be none.
Just a guess, but I think its safe to assume it will be Wifi only. |

| reply to dellsweig I don't understand, what is there to gain by using Vonage on an iPhone? Is it just a cool factor thing? I mean, I understand that, if you own an iPhone, it would be something that would matter to you and price is no object... -- Vonage user since Mar 2004. |

I mean, I understand that, if you own an iPhone, it would be something that would matter to you and price is no object... I used to not think too much of the iPhone till I got one - so before you equate "price" or use the term "cool factor" look into the device a little bit - you might be suprised....
As to what I think your point is...
The ability to make and receive VoiP calls on the iPhone is equivelent to the time when all we had was POTS lines and a high speed line in our homes and Vonage (and others) came along and gave us the freedom to make telephone calls WITHOUT using the POTS carrier (ATT, Verizon, etc).
Depending on the functionality in theis iPhone app - the same will be true.
Because the iPhone has a true unlimited data plan (no caps) - and I get the data plan for $23 after discounts - it would be possible to use the phone capability WITHOUT using carrier minutes. While ATT requires a data and voice plan, it should be possible to "unlock" (jailbreak) an iPhone and use only a data plan or just get the smallest voice plan possible.
I hope that answered your "strange" post |

| but, if we're restricted to WI-FI, the mobility part of the cell phone is _mostly_ lost. Yes you can place a call via WI-FI, but then you're stuck in that connection area to complete the call. If you start a call from a hot spot, you have to finish the call from the same hot spot. -- GO LEAFS GO (all the way to the golf course) |

Hopefully the masses out here that brought us Jailbroken iPhones will help us out
Seriously - I think the attention Apple/Att has brought on themselves from the FCC and FTC will eventually play out in our favour - wishful thinking - maybe....
It might take some time but eventually the voice/data model will fade away and become all data. |

Does the 3gunrestrictor require a jailbroken phone or will it work on standard 3gs (3.0.1) phones like the tether and mms hacks?? |
