| help with tomato and multiple routers
I'm helping a school set up some additional wireless access points, and am using the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 loaded with Tomaso 1.25.
The network seems to be run with a netgear FR114p as the main router; I don't want to mess with that yet, since I don't fully know how they have it set up.
When computers turn on, they get ip's in this range: 192.168.0.x
I still want people to be able to access their shared drives, etc, so I believe that means I should set tomato to get out of the way and turn off dhcp. I've set up the buffalo to be static ip 192.168.0.30 and have turned off dhcp server, and set the wireless mode to access point. [isn't static best here for the buffalo, so I can know where to find it in the future?]
Finally, I think I just plug the 'feed' cable that goes into their main switch into a lan port on the back of the buffalo, plug in any other computers in the room into the other lan ports, then I should have it working just the way it was with an additional wireless ap.
Am I thinking about this right? I've set up my work network with multiple dlink dir-655's just the way I've described and it seems to work fine. My initial try with the buffalo firmware didn't work, so I'm trying tomato.
Am I forgetting about anything?
Thank you for guidance. Sean |

| Sounds like you have the plan down pretty well.
Are you sure that .30 for the Buffalo isn't within the Netgear's DHCP lease range? I'm wondering, since you said you don't know how it's fully set up.
In Tomato 1.25, there is a setting to change the WAN port to a LAN port, should you need an additional port. I have, however, read about this setting not functioning as expected, just to let you know.
How many additional APs are you adding? Try to space out the channels, if possible. -- "Suddenly everything is fainting, falling from a broken ladder's rung. I strongly recommend that you put these new access points in their own subnet to keep them out of the way. |
