Is someone using my Network????

I just hooked up 3 laptops and my desktop with a Belkin, I have HughesNet satellite for internet. I see every evening that bandwidth is being used and NOBODY is on their computers!

I checked the computers and made sure there was nothing updating etc....

What could be sucking my bandwidth???

Small amounts of traffic, due to stray packets on the internet, is pretty normal.

Heavy traffic can be due to malware (such as a virus) on one of those computers.

When you "checked the computers," did you do an actual packet trace? A lot of background services of either the OS and / or apps might do silent connections by design.

To reiterate what nwrickert See Profile said, you'll see activity on the WAN port absolutely constantly, whether you're doing anything or not, just due to noise from the WAN.

What you should not see, and what would be cause for alarm, would be constant, substantial packet traffic on the LAN ports when the machines are (supposed to be) idle.

Is was a little more than 80MB. Thats a lot when you have satellite internet and a basic daily download package of 200MB daily. I'm really new to this networking stuff but I think its really cool

Is your Belkin wireless AP secured against unauthorized use by e.g. your neighbors?

From what I can see you would need a password to get in. I was checking for open networks on my laptop and I saw that the neighbor down the street who just got the HughesNet Dish, I picked up their Belkin and it had a lock on it.

I see it didnt happen since but I am keeping my eye on it. Is there any software where we can see changes on home networks? I really dont know much about networking. I have 3 Nintendo DS's hooked up and 3 laptops and a Wii.. Should I worry?

The Belkin faces you an administration interface you can access from a browser that shows you, among many other things, exactly which client systems are connected. That's where you'd look.

Thank you for your reply.. I'm going to have to take a good look at things and make sure everything is locked down.

Thanks again!
