[All] Boston Area Camping

Hello Folks,

The wife and I are driving up from Chicago on a last minute vacation this weekend to preserve our sanity and looking for a good campground to stay at. We're avid tent camper's and with the economy the way it is..have to do things on the cheap.

I'd welcome some sage advice on state parks with camping facilities a reasonable distance from Boston.

After about 4 days we may be traveling up the coast of main and welcome any thoughts on places to hang our tents for a few day as well.

Many Thanks

We camp a lot. We have a custom Avalanche that we sleep in, with a tent that fits off the back. We carry our own water supply, so we stay at a variety of different types of sites.

This lists a number of assorted type sites:

These would be predominantly state run campgrounds, the second links to MA campgrounds fairly near to Boston proper, some of which are on the ocean:

We like the Boston Harbor Islands Campground, Nickerson State Park, and Massasoit State Park pretty well if we want to be fairly near the city.

There are any number of good private campgrounds that are very reasonable, too, and this year there have been vacancies almost every weekend. We have been packing the truck, filling our water tanks, and going in whatever direction seems interesting, and have had no trouble finding a place to stay.

Southern New Hampshire and Northern Rhode Island have decent camping within about an hour of Boston proper.

Edit: The home page of one of those links will let you choose any state, so you can see what Maine and New Hampshire offer for camping, too...

mouseferatu nailed it. Driving the coast of Maine? Hit LL Bean for an hour, it's camping Mecca. Best wishes for the weather, it's been a bit damp this year.

Motel advice: off the beaten trail? Mid-week? Empty parking lot? Be polite and ask for a deal. DON'T mention on-line companies, we hate them!

Maine: just north of Kittery: »www.harbourview.com/ Nice little campground on the ocean...great restaurant (Cape Neddick Lobster Pound) right across the street.

We've been there mostly over Columbus day-not sure how it is during the summer...

Have been lazy about photos this summer.

I took quite a few that I haven't gone through at all, and I have a mess that need re-sizing. I also have gone any number of places and left my cameras in the truck due to lousy weather... this hasn't been a great summer for pics all in all.

We are in the process of switching from the truck/tent combo to a 28 foot Keystone Sprinter tow-behind camper. Has a lot of space, and good plumbing, heating, and cooling- a vast improvement.

I hope to get some decent pics when we head north for a week and a half in mid September with the camper.
