Problems porting from CV to local cable provider

Hey guys,

I know there are several other similar topics, but I didn't want to clutter them up with my specifics, so I thought I'd start my own.

We lived in Tampa, FL with a POTS line of 813-818-xxxx. About 4-5 years ago, I switched that to CallVantage. We then moved to St. Pete in the next county down. No problem taking my CV adapter with me 30 minutes away.

Since CV is closing, I though I'd port this number over to my cable provider Bright House Networks, but unfortunately, they said the number cannot be ported and didn't provide a reason. I called CV support and she's suggesting getting the number put BACK into a POTS line and then porting over to the cable provider. This would be a pain, but could probably be done.

I'm just wondering the best way to handle this. Funny thing is, a guy in the same situation (but had not moved) had no problem porting his CV number to FIOS.

So, what are my best options? Should I try porting the number to Vonage first and then to my cable provider? Or should I look into turning this number into a POTS line and then converting back to VoIP? Oddly enough, we have a rental house that's up for sale and will be vacant in a week or two, so I believe I could have Verizon put this number back on POTS, but then the number is ringing at another house where we aren't while that while conversion is taking place.....

Any advice is much appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Aaron

I ported to Vonage with 0 issues in a week. That would be the way to go.

Yeah, I checked the portability tool on Vonage and it seems the number is able to be moved over. Although I guess I don't understand why to them and not to my cable company.

I'd prefer to find a solution to get it over to the cable company, but I don't want to lose the number either. We've had it for a long time and it's a real nice number.

Is your number a valid area code and exchange for your street address? CallVantage and Vonage are both "nomadic" services meaning their numbers will work just about anywhere. Cable companies and wireline phone companies don't offer nomadic services - telephone numbers are tied to geographic territories. There are databases that map street addresses to allowed area code-exchange combinations and if you are outside yours you will have to find another nomadic carrier (essentially all 3rd party VoIP providers support nomadic use).

Thanks Scrat, I think that explains it then.

Yeah, my current number is 813 area code, but my current physical location is in a different area code.

I do have Vonage already on a 2nd line for my home office, and have experienced many many complaints of fast busy, going right to Voice mail, etc when people are calling in.

So I suppose I need to research the best nomadic provider for me. Any hints on where to best start my research. Was really looking forward to having the caller ID on my TV via the cable company, though.

Would one expect better voice quality for a local number with a non-nomadic carrier?

As far as I know, CableTV company telephone service mirrors POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) in that both of these provider types require that your number be within the rate center that matches your "service address" with the phone company. This has nothing to do with Nomadic E911.

That's why it is impossible to port from POTS, CableTV, Cellular and VoIP to CableTV or POTS when the number to be ported is not in the new residence's rate center. Area code has no bearing! Even adjacent towns in the same area code (but in different rate centers) preclude this type of port.

If you value your current number, your can most likely port to a VoIP carrier ... in which case Nomadic E911 does come into play with some VoIP providers because they may ask you for your service address --- which does not have to match your rate center --- so that E911 responders arrive at the correct address.

Porting to a Cellular account (from POTS, CableTV, VoIP) is often doable if the ported number is in the wide geographic area supported by the cellular provider. For example, in my area of Northern NJ, I could port a DID from any rate center in my Area Code (973 & 862) or nearby Area Codes (201 & 551) because ATT and Verizon consider all these ACs to be within a single coverage area.

DB --- I'm not sure why you reached this conclusion. A Nomadic E911 Carrier simply means that you yourself can change the E911 response if and when you move around the country ... or you can set the E911 response address to where you really live (if you have a phone number in another rate center). This has nothing to do with audio quality. A non-Nomadic 911 carrier (such as POTS and Cable) sends the Emergency Responders to your Service Address (which must match your phone number's rate center).

Also, a local VoIP number has no relationship to audio ... since the calls go out through your ISP and then over the WorldWideWeb (not telephone cables to a local CO). Audio depends on other things such as bandwidth, VoIP adapter settings, neighborhood cable saturation, etc. Yo can have a Los Angeles CA AC213 number and use it at your home in AC201 Northern NJ ... and the audio is not affected.

It wasn't a conclusion. It was a question.

If you haven't found a new phone provider already, I would give Phone Power a look. I recently switched from CallVantage to Phone Power and am enjoying the service. Switchover went just fine and no trouble taking my number with me. They also have very reasonable rates.
