| Netopia 3347-02 Problem
I'm using the above router and have owned an ISP as well as a computer store many years ago. I have a machine that is more than capable of screaming through any web page and my router says on it's home page that I have 512 up | 3008 down. Here is the problem - I click on a link or type in a page and everything hangs for about 20 secs ........ then a little of it pops on then a little pause and a little bit more ....... is this the router acting up or am I marking up the wrong tree? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. |

Time to do a little troubleshooting.
1) Access the modem status page, are DSL link stats OK? Margin should be over then 6 dB. At 6 or below modem may not be able to hold sync. Between 6-10 vulnerable to noise. At 10 or over should be fine.
2) Run performance test. There is one on tools page or use speedtest.net »/tools »speedtest.net/
Visualware test is nice because it provides report on instantaneous transfer: »myspeed.visualware.com/index.html
3) If modem stats and speed test check out your ISP may have slow DNS. In that case might want to try OpenDNS or run your own DNS resolver.

Here is a sample of ping that's terrible -
Pinging 209.191.93.53 (timer gran. 10 ms)... Ping size: 100 Ping Count: 5 ICMP echo reply from 209.191.93.53, 50 ms ICMP echo reply from 209.191.93.53, 50 ms ICMP echo reply from 209.191.93.53, 50 ms ICMP echo reply from 209.191.93.53, 50 ms ICMP echo reply from 209.191.93.53, 50 ms
Testing done on speedtest.net showed 2.55 down and .45 up on all locations but the interesting thing was the pings which were 50 to 75 or higher. Does this point to the DNS issues? |

join:2009-08-03 Bakersfield, CA | OpenDNS was the ticket. I was using the default att.net dns servers which to be honest were crap. Latency of about 50 to 125ms and then pow down to 15 with OpenDNS. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction dude. |
