| [CS] [CS:S] Map making assistance
Hopefully someone has already run into this problem, instead of me waiting to hear back from steam support.
I had been waiting to see if the steam would ever make/port over to CS:S the map: cs_estate from 1.6 version but alas they have not done so[or they don't plan on making a CS:S version?]
I miss not being able to play on that map...so I thought, I've been wanting to make a map and thought now is as good a time as any...
But the problem first was, where do I get the software?? Oh yeah, the steam download thing-ah-ma-bob...download both source SDK & source SDK base[hammer would not start without source sdk base]...
I made sure I set everything too -- counter-strike: source during the map creation process --and did not select deathmatch...
Stayed up all night saturday night to build my first map ever...I then compiled the map..oh wow a leak..got to fix the pipes...hey! wait a minute i never installed any pipes in my map! then I read up on what a leak is, simply I had left a whole or two, or three or 4..or 5 or 6 or 7 that did not seal the map fully...got those resolved...and at last my map is playable...
its crude, no items in the way, has more of a RB6 feel as opposed to the original small map...but I did keep the 3 levels of the map intact: 2nd floor of building, 1st floor of building[ground floor], and basement/tunnel access... front door, back door...
Before I began building my map, i read up on any and all articles on what makes a good map...the biggest thing I found/saw was that one should try to use ramps, instead of ladders...I got to thinking about that, yeah i can see where ramps are better, especially for the pathing of the hosties...so anywhere there were ladders, i used a ramp[such as like the back entrance area of the building... i think the original had a ladder and window to crawl through where as I made a ramp and a full door way]...
Oh yeah..anyone know to use/place these door in a map?? These things are so annoying, and I can't find a decent sample or steps to placing the door just right...so at the moment i left the doors off but would like to add doors to complete the original feel of the map from 1.x version...
Doors in the original version[1.x]: Front[double doors][I'm guessing it was [2] single doors opposite one another?] Side door[left side as your facing the building]... and the two rooms up top[2nd floor] that each held a hostie...
there are [5] hosties to resuce[just like the original version and placed in the same place: [2] in the basement of the mansion; [1] in the rear of the building on first floor[inside left]; [1] in the top floor, left room; [1] in the top floor right room;
Problem: a few entities are not showing up in my drop-down selection list in hammer. namely the: 1. buy zone; 2. hostage rescue zone; 3. bomb zone;
I can't find them in my list of drop brushed to select from...
the doors, buy zone and rescue zone are the only hurdles I'm facing at getting my first map completed...any and all help is appreciated. ==== Shouldn't matter but hardware/OS specs: CPU: Intel quad-core 2.66 G MB: Intel RAM: 8 GB DDR3 Vid: Radeon HD4670[PCIe] O/S: Windows Vista ultimate SP1[64 bit ver] === Extra note: If any one can tell me how to create my own wall texture so I can add: my name[awolfpup/date made/give credit to valve for the original map design as inspiration, etc] and stuff to a wall texture so I can represent myself for this map that would be great too! -- Ga. 1 edit | Thanks for the video link...but he doesn't go over what to do when the entities you are suppose to have do not show up in the list that you see him clicking on...[where he selected the T/CT from...
although I didn't know you can change textures on that fly like he does..that was helpful for future reference...but right now...the more immediate problem...
need the: buy zone, rescue zone and working rotating doors would be nice[not the sliding one]... -- Ga. Secretary of State Supervisor, Network Support and Services Professional Licensing Boards |

| I found a basic hammer video. Here it shows you how to make a buy zone, rescue zone and few other things.
I found a few videos showing how to make rotating doors but they only show the sliding door.

| Now that was a bit more helpful...I'm at work, so I won't be able to test it...but that was the first time I saw someone make box[make sure its touching the ground] and you make the box the buy/rescue zone..maybe that is the missing piece of the puzzle...
The only thing I don't like so far about hammer, there is no easy way to tell size of the environment...once I completed the map and added my first hostie he was dwarfed in the room...was able to resize the rooms a bit down... -- Ga. | reply to NightLinks Alright, with a few other videos I have found out on the net, I have successfully figured out how to make both the hostage rescue and the buy zones... whew!
I have only [2] problems remaining now:
1. hostages do not follow when asked by a ct..mind you this is in the testing, I have not placed this on a server as of yet... so the hosties respond that they are going to follow me, but remain motionless...
2. I've setup a few doors via the prop_rotating_door thing, the doors open in the game fine, but when I try to pass through the now open doorway, I am being stopped[or blocked?] from going through the now open doorway...
the way/path is clear...no walls are blocking my way through the doorway...nothing on the side either...for all tense and purposes my character should be able to pass right through, but is being stopped...its very odd... -- Ga. | Pup regarding the door thing... are you sure the doorway is wide enough?
I know when I map for America's Army... I have to make the doorway big enough to accommodate the door's frame and my character. -- Obama is a liar.... a cheat... a person of low moral character... the least common denominator... |

The map is now done!!!
I was unable to get the darn doors to work the way I was hoping to get them to work...just like in the old 1.x steam version of the map of the same name...but everything else works...
You can download the zip file here: »www.awolfpupsden.com/cs_estate_css_ver.ZIP -- Ga. Secretary of State Supervisor, Network Support and Services Professional Licensing Boards |

| Update:
With some help from a clan member I recently joined for CS:S, the windows and doors are now working in the map and the finished files I have already re-uploaded to my server the link above is still valid for the finished product.
Hope everyone enjoys the map...
the file[zip] includes: [1] bsp file[the actual map], [1] nav file[this permits the hosties to be rescued..i.e. pathing]
only the above [2] files are required to play the map, the below are extra files: ===== [1] readme txt file with installation notes/credits etc.. for placing the files in the correct spot in your server/pc...
[1] vmf file, this is the actual file that I holds the map data, for anyone who wanted to be able to add or modify the map in the future without having to redo the entire map from scratch!...[I used the hammer editor via source sdk from steam to make this map]...
it was a labor of love making this map, and it does resemble the original, except no water fountain out in front...but pretty much, if you remember playing the original version, you should have no problem playing this map...
the one thing I did do, the T spawn is the back of the map[but behind the building and out of sniper sight from CT spawn], instead of having T's spawn inside the house[thereby] permitting them to get into choke point holds faster...and more importantly this will stop any nade spamming from occuring as well!! I planned that well in advance..as the T buy zone is in the same area that the spawn in...
in essence giving this map a more rainbow six feel...where both sides are starting on equal footing...
There are things in this map the original didn't have, llike areas on the CT spawn the top of the wall has places for CT snipers to hide behind so they wouldn't get picked off right away by the T snipers... overall this map is about balancing the positions..and I think I have achieved that goal...
Hope everyone enjoys it!!! -- Ga. Secretary of State Supervisor, Network Support and Services Professional Licensing Boards |
