Verizon first came to my neighborhood about a month ago to start installing fios in town. They put up the large, beige distribution box at the beginning of my street along with several spools of fiber optic cable left hanging there. They left it that way for about 3-4 weeks, then they returned to do more work this past wednesday. The past few days just one truck shows up around 8:00am EST and leaves around noon. The guy has made some progress over the past three days. Here are some pictures of the work that has been done:

Another, close pic of the box.
The tech also installed a small box on the wires today in front of my house, can anyone tell me what this box is/does. Also, based on the pictures in this and the above post could anyone possibly tell me how much longer it might be until the fios service is ready in my neighborhood?

The larger box hanging off the wires is a splice case that covers the connection between one cable and another. The tiny box should have angled connectors (I can't see on the picture) which will be the actual terminal; each connector is reserved for a customer.

My neighborhood had the hub placed in late March, the splicing done in June, and we were able to order service in early July. So I'd say (barring unpredictable trouble) you have only a month or two to wait.

That's an FDT. Your drop connector will plug into the end of it.

I'd just like to know what "tiny box" you're referring to, the ones to the right and left of the pole have been there long before FiOS came along. Also, is there any difference between the rectangular "FDT" and the ones that are circular in shape that verizon uses, which I have also heard referred to as splice cases.

Depends what concessions your town management tries to wring out of verizon.
We're in Westford MA. They completed the wiring here in April/May. Nothing has happened since and Verizon still says no availability.
I believe Tyngsboro MA waited in that state for 18 months as the town management couldn't come to agreement with Verizon over what they wanted.

Well, according to this article the selectmen in the town did vote and approved verizon's cable license/permit, plus verizon will add the surcharge that will go toward supporting the cable access station (North TV) which I'm sure is a positive for them since it seems comcast doesn't do that. It seems it was unanimously approved. So aside from verizon matching comcast's provisions dollar-for-dollar, plus adding the 4.5% surcharge, are there any other concessions that the town may be looking for that I'm unaware of that could delay the process of making fios available to residents in North Attleboro?

Looks like you are good to go, wish our town management could be so proactive.
Did you try the Verizon Fios page to see if they are showwing availability or taking pre-orders?

Several weeks ago I got a postcard in the mail saying fios is on the way. Checking for availability on verizon's website still says not available. And, according to this PDF: »www22.verizon.com/about/communit···0809.pdf we aren't yet on the official list of towns in which fios is available, but at the bottom it says it will soon be available.

JJ1234, I see that you posted a topic asking whether fios had been cancelled in north attleboro or not. The response to your question directed you to this thread, if you do find your way here (which you did if you are reading this) could you let me know where you heard this horrible news? The pictures that I posted above are what it still looks like on my street, no progress has yet been made on this since last Friday, so unless it has been a recent decision to cancel fios, it seems to be still on.

@comcast.net

I talked with one of the verizon installer guys and fios is on hold in Attleboro because town officals are dragging their feet on some issues. Verizon was going full force on the install and should have been done by end of aug or mid sept but now it's not clear when it will be ready since they don't know when Attleboro will start moving on this.

(I tried calling the town hall and anyone that could get me info on this was either on vacation or not around today. If anyone knows someone that works for the town maybe they can find out what the hold up is.)

This sucks, the town better get moving with this, because it's just ridiculous. Is the install held up in both attleboro and north attleboro? Well, it would be great if you (or anyone else) could get a hold of someone in town hall who knows the status of fios and what the issues are, if the damn town is looking for more money I say they should just sell that painting! They make so much money from so many things us residents are charged for and fios deployment shouldn't be stopped due to the pathetic town's financial woes.

This is an update to my original posting of the pictures of what the installation of fios in my neighborhood looks like. Correct me if I'm wrong.... but I believe the two devices on he ground are splice cases. What is the purpose of these? Also, any additional information is greatly appreciated!

The HUB mounted on the pole appears to be a 216 service HUB. On it's back is a black triangular shaped wedge. There are 2 fiber segments (tails if you will) coming out of that wedge. The smaller (diameter) fiber is the incoming to the HUB, and is spliced to the incoming to the HUB from the CO, in the smaller splice case. The outgoing from the HUB, a 216 fiber cable, is spliced to all the outgoing (to the neighborhoods) fiber segments in the larger splice case.

Those 2 tails, the CO incoming, and all the outgoing to service addresses, are left long enough to be pulled into a splicers van, while the splicing occurs.

After all splicing and testing are done, the segments hanging down with splice cases, are pulled up to the wire and lashed in place.

There was some more verizon work done on my street today. Today a large van (which I've never seen before) was working on the splice cases (of which there are pictures of above). Here is a picture that I found online of the van that was on my street today. Can somebody tell me what this van was doing or your best guess as to what work was being performed? Also, how much longer do you think it will be until the service is ready??

I live in NA and that van was parked on our street for 5 days (8 hours a day) working on the splice. That was in May and there is no signs of service yet. Also, if you drive around NA you'll see there are a few places where there are poles (like you have pictured above) with the cable "hubs" are laying on the ground tied to the poles and have been that way for 4-5 weeks now.

VZ told the paper/town that it expected to go live on Fios end of June, early July. Obviously plans have changed.

Bottom-line I wouldn't hold your breath that you'll be getting service anytime soon just because you now see the "splice truck" in front of your place.

The HUB is the almond colored box up on the pole. Those are splice cases on the ground. Some areas put them back up on the wire every night, and some leave them on the ground so there is no bucket truck needed to bring them down in the morning and put them back up at night.

Apologize, don't know the terminology nor name of the equipment. Was responding to OP's question as to how much longer after seeing "splice" truck that that service would be available. Thanks for the clarification.

So, basically, I shouldn't expect fios to be available anytime soon?? Also, as I do know most of the terminology for the equipment up on the poles, I am unclear as to what exactly splicing is and what it does. Could anyone explain the concept to me and why it takes so long!

Verizon has been saying "we'll slow expansion / upgrades" as a result of now having local property taxes applied to their equipment and telephone poles.

The property tax adjustment means at least $1 million more for the City of Boston. No doubt other cities and towns will also assess for property taxes. In the end, the consumer will pay.
