| WildBlue + World of WarCraft
Hello Where I live both DSL and Cable arent available, and I really dont want EVDO due to the 5 GB monthly caps.. So.. I was looking into satellite. I know satellite has some issues with latency and particularly online gaming / Ventrilo etc. But I was just wondering, has anyone had any experience with World of WarCraft and Wildblue service? This and maybe a few other online RPGs or RTS games like StarCraft would be all I would really be interested in playing on it. I'm aware there will be some latency but I just want to know if its playable, because right now im using dialup and the game disconnects constantly in high population areas and I cant do anything that involves lots of people on the screen at once. Im really looking for someone who has actually tested the game on a Wildblue connection. Thanks :P |

| I don't have wild blue I got Hughes but my opinion is that it will be worse than dialup.

| reply to Halddir »www.56k.com/ This site should be able to give you some dialup modem settings to be able to avoid disconnections due to line noise.
Many people do post that dialup is better than satellite when it comes to gaming, but use the satellite connection for large gaming updates. -- Consumer Rights is more than just a suggestion. |

Well, its not really due to line noise, its just because theres too much data coming my way from the server and it overloads the connection and disconnects.. :l |

@wildblue.net | reply to Halddir My son plays WOW extensively on WildBlue. He experiences some unacceptable latency, occasionally. We have a high band width account (for my requirements). |

| reply to Halddir Wildblue has too much lag for WOW. I had to cancel my WOW membership because of it. I would always see latency over 2000, with well over 5000 quite common. The actual speed isn't a problem, just the latency (lag). It was way worse than I used to get with dialup.

| reply to Halddir I've never replied to one of these forums before so bear with me. I'm in the same boat as you, and cable and dsl are not available where I live now. (Oh how I do miss cable tho). I have also been playing WoW and using Vent on Wild Blue as well for the last 7 months, and before we got the satellite hooked up out here, I was playing for about 2 months using dial-up.
If you are using dial-up you obviously know that Vent is impossible on it. With or without WoW running. Its too choppy and people say I sounded like a monkey in a fax machine when I tried to use it. On satellite, Vent works just fine, except for the latency which is a doozie because it takes a second or 2 before what you say over vent to actually go thru, and 9 times out of 10 you end up interrupting someone that has started talking. But oh well, they get over it.
As for WoW, my latency was actually better on dial-up than it is on the satellite, (was running about 700-800ms on dial-up and with wild blue I'm running between 1400-2000ms) but at least I can go to raids, and instances and the crowded cities like Dal (assuming WoW is the game you were talking about) without getting d/ced and stuck and having to have one of my friends or guildies log on to my toon and port her out of the cities. And not to go off-topic too much and start blabbing about the game, but since my toon is a caster, some cast-bar addons that help with the latency and some /stopcasting macros help out TONS and make the latency issue a little more tolerable.
On wild blue I get 17gb or w/e for the download limit, and playing WoW I dont think I come close to that limit usually, unless WoW downloads a ridiculously large patch or something, and I have 3 other computers in my house using the net also. When they do "fap" you (I think its called fap) for going over the limit, its just like being back on the dial up, you cant use vent and my latency on the game goes up to like, 20k (yes 20,000) and then d/c's me.
I would pretty much give anything to be able to get cable internet or dsl out here where I live, but for now, since I have a nasty addiction to WoW, I make do with what I've got. Its not the best, but its better than nothing. Hopefully this answered some of the stuff you wanted to know about it. |

| reply to Halddir It's playable. But with much lag. If you can tolerate delays between pressing an attack button and seeing the attack, then you can play. But it is very very laggy. It's been a long time since I've played WoW, but I still play StarWars Galaxies. Press a button, and wait for things to happen. ugly. |

| reply to Halddir I am a Hughesnet subscriber.I play WOW alot.I also play 2Moons a little bit.I know the to systems are different but similar. So I can tell you with my connection,it is laggy. However,I leveled to 80 in 4 to 5 weeks and have attended raids and such to. I mainly play solo by choice,it has nothing to do with the Latency. I am just anti-social. I have been intested in how well Wild Blue is compared to Hughesnet in this department myself.
I have the Pro Plan,1.2 Mbps/200 Kbps 300mb usage Threshold. Me and my son play on this connection ALOT,at the same time. I NEVER see latency below 1100ms,with averages in between 1200ms and 1600ms.It spikes to 3000ms Regularly, but does not stay there.Bad spikes I have seen hit,25000ms.No joke.
It remains playable below 3000ms.Remember I leveled to 80 in 5 weeks.Leveling this quick is not the norm.I know there are some that levels quicker, but they have better connections.
I tell you this not to "pull" you to Hughesnet, but since the connection is similar it gives you an Idea of what to expect.
Here is some links I posted about Hughesnet and Latency. »[WotLK] question for a tech guy smart on bandwidth
»What your average MS response time in WoW?
I recommend if the latency is the key point,to find more info on the EVDO connection first,it is bound to give better latency. -- Heavily Armed and Easily Provoked |

| reply to Halddir well of course it's going to lag. The satellite is 22,500 miles in space. Total trip is 90,000 miles. Light takes 500 milliseconds to travel that distance. Not to mention the normal lag your going to get anyways on top of it. Until they move satellites to a much lower orbit or find a way to increase the speed of light( both impossible ) nothing is going to change. |

| reply to Halddir I play WoW nightly, yes I have some lag, but its nothing compared to constantly lagging out due to my old dial up connection. Occasionally I have a lag spike that can cause some minor issues, but compared to not even being able to enter some of the major cities to being able to run through and interact with the npc's I think its great. |

1 edit | reply to Halddir Hi, I use both Hughesnet and Starband. I usto be able to play WOW and eve with my hns proplus, but not so much any more I actually cannot. But Starband has been working well. Average ping times are 600-700 ms, I use the Nova 1500 and am happy. Speed is good, at 1500-1700 dosn and 180-250 up. Good luck!! | reply to Halddir I play on Earthen Ring...not sure where this server is based (probably east coast since a friend in NC played here so this is where I joined). Checking on Speedtest.net my upload/download stays around 0.40-0.45mb download and 0.05 upload. I have WB but on my budget can only afford the basic package. My average latency is 1400-1700 with ~1500 being the norm. Spikes of 2500 happen from time to time but dont stay for long. My characters are mostly DPS, but any time I'm in parties or raids my characters do poor compared to similarly equipped players that end up doing 2 or 3x my damage. I've come to the conclusion that 1.5 seconds of ping are to blame. Most of time any time-to-cast animation will start when I click, and then after said delay the actual cast begins.
I have dialup, but it has become more and more unreliable. Being in the boondocks 26.4kb is as good as I can get which makes places like Dalaran out of the question. Though this connection would give me 300-400 latency (VERY acceptable), disconnects became quite common in the last year ish. I find this getting more and more aggravating. 1500 latency is a killjoy. |
