Returned to DIR-655

Well 100% as the main router as the belkin N+ started to drop internet connections on the fly on all connections. Belkin N+ will serve me as wireless access point for now. So much issues with N router I see. I have had it up to here with them.

I am seeing issues already with NS where IP address works but not NS.

System100 or 192.168.x.x numbers work but not the name. DNS Replay is grey and enabled.

Nothing but issues today.. With current firmware installed. Wireless wasn't connecting to the internet only wired. Decided I to try my 2x buffalo WHR-HP-G54 with DD-WRT. So I decided to give those a try again. Sure enough the wireless locked onto all the wireless laptop. Wired connections after some tweaking now can see each other. So that works but DIR-655 and Belkin N+ gave issues after so many hours of usage. Might still go back to the Belkin N+ or something else. Just have to see how it goes...

Same thing here, returned to DIR-655, this time I got my hands on a HW Version A4, the one I busted with firmware 1.31 was an A3 and that one worked just fine with firmware 1.21.
This one is delivered with v1.21EU and don’t act as the one I hade before. This one won’t open ports on Virtual Server (21) for my FTP, that is *not* working.

Just to make it really “fun”, I bought a new DIR-825 yesterday HW Ver B1 and that one was a really mess too, it wont open the ports either so I took it down, talk about crap. As for now I have two DIR-655 and one 825, none of them is as they should be.

The best router I ever hade, so far is LINKSYS WRT54GL, that one really did what it was suppose to do, but it could only get up in a speed of 50 – 60 Mbit and I thought that was a little bit of waste when I have 100Mbit down, guess I have to buy a Linksys again.

I know that for many years D-Link was more or less “crap” in there way of building and programming “the old ones” of there series, seems like there are trying to keep up the appearance. I have been spending too much money and time on this crap already.

I’m a old beta tester of a lot of strange things, I can only say that D-Link is going to be very sorry pretty soon, when people discover what kind of crap this is, the thing is that more and more young people is getting a lot better at this and they learn faster.

What happens when “young people” turn the back on them?

Anyway, I’m getting tired of this; I got to have something that really works. ..

I am old beta tester also but these routers promise so much but don't deliver. Once you turn on wireless N all hell breaks loose.

I am now back with Belkin N+ I finally did that 30/30/30 + 30/30/30 on it seems to fix the issue with internet disconnection. DIR-655 has too many issues for me to sit there and try to figure out what's worng with it. I really like using DD-WRT on the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. Both in usage well until last night. But what I could gather, downloading BT average faster, LAN and WAN ports can be set to 100Full Duplex on the Switch on the router. Some routers really could use that feature, As by default everything is in Auto sense. I would like to control my ports speed. Anyway everything was looking good until I use my MediaMVP network player, auto sync hipcups was too much to bear. I started adjusting Qos engine in the DD-WRT software. I had it in realtime using the wireless laptop. But nothing I did kept it stable enough to watch any video.

Oh well, so those well be kept for wireless AP for G. back then go on the storage shelf for now. DIR-655 is there too. I look at this router and say piece of crap and now it overheats too!

Belkin N+ although it doesn't have so many features in the web admin but really do I need all those features. This router doesn't even have that crap DNS Replay problems. I friend of mine told me that Zyxx brand is no better he had just got his dual WAN wireless G and now it had to be set back to them for repairs. They just sent him a different one.

What happen to Quality Control on Electronic Devices the old routers never had all these issues. I think after Belkin N+ I'll just stick with next generation of Gig or Dual Gig or whatever they'll call it for wired router then buy Wireless AP to go along with it. Having a stock pile of bad N wireless routers is stupid, but what can you do nothing, just waste of money!

One that might do some good, have you seen this?

I don’t like the price on it, expensive I might say but if it delivers what it promises it might be worth it. ZyXEL, well. I work with one of their programmers many years ago, long before internet, the time when we where using dial up modems (lol), I had a BBS my self and was using only ZyX modems, then there products was reel quality, today is a whole other story.

I have tried out a few of the products (routers) for a few years now and they are worse then our 655, some of them anyway. Many of them I have installed as a request from users that wanted them, when setting up network and intranet / internet at their home.

I don’t think the quality of the electronic devices has gone so bad, I think the problem is the programmers; they can’t keep up with all the new products fast enough. That’s probably one of the reasons why the firmware is so busted, they should have begin to use open source and let anyone write the firmware, if the can and want to.

Anyway, the bottom-line is that I’m going to buy a WRT54GL again, that one is a little bit slow, but what the heck! Its w_o_r_k_i_n_g, guess we have to wait for a REAL Company to build a router that can do what we want.

Or another way around it, throw the whole shit out, buy a network card more and put it in my server, throw out XP and install Windows Server 7 or Linux and use that as a router / firewall.

Maybe you should turn DNS Relay off?

The routers runs fine with 1.32.

You think? I don't agree, I have a A3 version with 1.32 and that one is busted, it hangs after a few days and when resetting to factory default, a few "old" settings appears, strange?!

Hi,

Why don't you guys quit playing with wireless routers and go the old school route.

I use a wired router (Now a trendnet. The newest one that newegg sells). And a Dlink access point (DWL 6000AP A/B). I will be changing that for a Dlink DWL7000AP A/B/G.

With the setup I have right now it has been running 24/7 for over five years.

The only change in the setup was when i upgraded to 10meg internet. I went from a Dlink 704 router to a trendnet router. the 704 is my backup router now...

It is a shame that all of these manufactures have gone to Plastic cases. The metal cases were far better for cooling.

Well enough rambling...:D

One more thing is that these Access Points can use both band at the same time ( the 6000AP and the 7000AP).

Well, if you want to continue having poor performance and forced to reset your router every few days, there's really nothing else I can recommend.

I had your same problems, till I did this:

After I flashed to a new firmware, I did the 30/30/30 reset.
I did not reload a previously saved config file, I started fresh.
I disabled DNS Relay, got my DNS servers from my ISP and threw them into my TCP/IP settings in Network Connections.
Then, in Network Settings, I Revoked all the IPs and restarted the computers. You have to Revoke the IP's or you'll continue having the problems even with DNS Relay off.

No problems with any of the 1.32 betas/final.

Yes I had it like what you had prior to the DIR-655. That setup worked great, but those type of routers just can't take the heavy media streaming to 7 or more network media devices, thus everything less they fail DI-series after 2 years.

Trendnet now has a gig metal case router no wireless with it. Good but what the heck inside it? Specs no one wants to do a review on it.

My Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 with DD-WRT on it 70mW for wireless runs excellent never need to touch that in AP mode only. But that's only 54mbps. Thus why N move but now N is only 150mbps that we all are stuck with. Wireless Commision reported that newer routers of N will be true 450mbps. So all Draft 2.0 N are really 150mbps and not the 300mbps or 600mbps as first promised.

I don't bother to save settings anymore or restore them I reset and start off fresh.. Still the hardware is getting odd.

I'll have to re-flash and see if the greyed DNS Relay enabled has gone. So your saying disable the DNS Relay and then don't bother to reserved the IP addresses.

That's right, tell me how it goes.

So far, 7 days and counting with zero issues, no resets, or slowdowns with 1.32 and DNS Relay off.

Did my own 30/30/30 reflash 30/30/30 and I was able to disable DHCP Reserved, DHCP Server and DNS Relay. Made setting changes and fired it up. Was working for 7 hrs then hicups started in the wireless where I would get a alert saying from my Network Drive Manager program that file server couldn't be reached. The software for wireless has a backup AP for G networks that had kicked in the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 running DD-WRT SP2/7/09 (there latest bug fix firmware).

Anyway

I had spoken too soon both can't be use AP one is failed overheated and the DIR-655 getting hot and can't access LAN but can get on WAN but still unless. Boy well they ever get the firmware to where you can use this router as AP. Right now it's a dud for me.

Hi,

Do you still have your network mounted on the wall? Or is it in a enclosure?

You could always add a little fan from an old CPU Heatsink/fan onto the routers/access points.

Network closet has it's own high V FAN to cool all the switches and now the main Enterprise Server in that closet. I wanted to redesign and have a backup temp control system. There is also a dehumidifier in the family room to take care. Soon I'll add portable AC but for now that room is well insulated.

I did some home improvements so now the wireless router is mounted outside and over the doorway there is hole that feeds the cables, wires, and usb through that back into the closet. Thus the wireless is not enclosed. But still that router shows 100% for N in that family room. There are times that gets 92% from the basement family up to the last floor upstairs. Wireless never going to be stable where it will be solid when it comes N. I guess when N is standard and the new N equipment comes out in 2010 were the rates of 450 to 600mbps would be more to what we should expect N to be.

G wireless ap fills in for the backup of N. I still got DIR-655 in the living for second wireless N ap. Where the main wireless N (belkin n+ is active. For now I just have the laptops set to grab the best signal when one drops too low then scan for the better signal.
