1. I'm on an HN9000 - Satellite Longitude: W 94° 57' 0". Which NOC would I be going through? I'm guessing somewhere in the mid-west as speedtest.net shows me closest to Kansas...
2. The test results page at speedtest.net also compare my latest test results to the ISP average. My test above is right on the money for my plan with the ISP average being only slightly slower. Is that ISP comparison to only other HN9000 speedtest.net users or to all HN users of the speedtest.net site? |

When done correctly, the mileage should be derived by measuring the distance from the selected test server and the location of the IP address that's requesting the test. In many cases, the IP address is often an administrative address, rather than an actual operational location. But in this case, it seems to be a glitch with SpeedTest.net itself. For some reason, it appears to be posting the distance from Kansas to whichever test server is selected. That makes no sense at all.
Anyway. Kansas is just one of their many servers, you can choose any one you want in SETTINGS. Since your NOC is in the Las Vegas area, I suggest you select their LAS VEGAS, NV (US) test server - and simply ignore the "distance".
2. All else being equal, provider test results (ISP) will typically be higher, because they do not include the portion of the test path between them and an external speed test site. a. ISP test: you>satellite>NOC>satellite>you. b. other test: you>satellite>NOC>external speed test site>NOC>satellite>you

| reply to zvolts Re your first question, here's a thread that discussed it at length several months ago. Don't know if anything has changed since then.
