Corning Unicam

Anybody here ever used Corning Unicam or other quick assembly termination kit?

there's no use of epoxy I am just curious to see if it's more of a temporary solution or can be use permanently

I don't like mechincal connectors, myself - but do know locations that these (and similar connectors) have been in place for years, with no issue... They are pricey, too.

If fusion spliced pig-tails, or polish-on connectors are available options, I'd go that way first...

I've learned hotmelt, cured epoxy. I think that the unicam connectors have epoxy inside and when you turn the cam the epoxy gets released inside the ferrule. I'd like to know why everybody is going that route now. Soon it will take no skills to do fiber.

LazMan where do you shop for your FO stuff? gear, disposables etc??? Is there a walkin store somewhere in Toronto? I'm getting tired of online stores I'd like to go inside a store and look at things before I buy them.

Hate to say it - but the skills required to do fibre have come WAY down from when I did my first splices, 14 years ago.

Used to need to use fibre scopes to line the fibres up by eye, tank of nitrogen to purge the splice area before the arc, then testing afterwards... LOL - now you push the green button, and wait for the checkmark or "x" to come up on the screen...

As for consumables, I get alot from Anixter, but order most of my materials straight from Corning (the company I work for is large enough, that direct is the best way to go)

Nedco and Anixter stock a decent assortment in the Toronto/Mississauga area, but they aren't always the cheapest...

I have installed 10s of thousands of these connectors over the last 10 years for all types of fiber and have never had to replace a connector that wasnt properly installed and tested.
