[Notebooks] Need A NEW laptop that still has PCMCIA slot....

A namebrand, preferably Toshiba, IBM (Lenovo) or HP, new laptop that still has PCMCIA slot, OR, firewire input built in. I would also like one that still includes a parallel port and com port (9 pin RS 232, I believe).

These 3 things are key, and if you know of a "Newer" laptop that still includes all three, please list, thank you!

Firewire input is easy to find on many notebooks. PCMCIA, not at all common on newer models (but may be available on some business notebook models), and you can pretty much forget a parallel port...9 pin com ports are gone as well.

The parallel port should not be a biggie, as you can buy a parallel to usb cable easily enough (though they are pricey).

You might need to consider a custom designed notebook for what you are looking for.

Toshiba Tecra series has what you need, except for the parallel port. Just add a CardBus/PC Card to get parallel.

Interesting thread.. I am looking to buy a new laptop for work, and need one that has a PCMCIA slot in it.

I used a PCMCIA RS-485 card (Quatec) and a PCMCIA LonWorks card. Yes, I have a USB LonWorks adapter, but I prefer the PCMCIA adapters over the USB ones.

A native serial port would also be good, but not required, as I have a USB to Serial adapter.

Bluetooth built in would also be nice.

I currently use a HP Pavilion zx5190us, and it has served me well, but I just feel the need for a new laptop (that and I am having problems with the sound again.)

I use my laptop when I go out of town for work, so having the capability to play DVD's and play basic games (like WoW) is a must as well.

EDIT - Forgot one thing... HAS TO RUN XP!

Hi,

How NEW are you looking for? A NEW NEW One or a New to you used one?

If you are looking for a new to you used one then a IBM T43 will give you everythin except a serial port.

It has a parallel port, two USB 2.0 ports, a pcmcia slot and an Express card slot, a 10/100/1000 nic,56k modem and depending on the options that the original buyer got you could have blue tooth, wireless B/G, A/B/G or B.

I have a T41 and a T43. I love the No Flex keyboards and LCD.

I think the T43 was the last T series Thinkpad to have a PCMCIA Slot. Also the newer ones after the T43 seem to only have 10/100 nics

I bought both of mine used and have not regreted it. I got both of them from the forsale forum from nagetech.

OH, And before I forget they both run XP...:D

Hello All,

Just to give an update on an old thread, I ended up ordering a Toshiba, one of the few brands that still have laptops with a PCMCIA Card slot, IEEE 1394 port, and unbelievable, a SERIAL port as well ..And one more plus, Windows XP Pro (instead of Vista, with free upgrade disc to Vista if I want to do that). It hasn't arrived yet, but thanks again to all for the suggestions, ideas, recommendations. I hope all goes well

Hi,

Not bad. The onl thing that hurts is the price.... Ouch.. LOL!!!

I think you might be able to run a second har drive in place of the optical drive.

The price is fine ($799) for a NEW (not refurbished) full laptop with all the old and new features, IMHO The only other models I've seen with both old style (PCMCIA, Serial, 1394 ports) & new options (multi-mem card support, cam, bluetooth, etc) are well over $1K.

Hi,

As long as that laptop meets your requirements and works to your satisfaction then I guess the price is good for you...
