Re: Embarq Pure Naked DSL

I just 'signed up' for Naked Pure DSL for Embarq. I always preferred going with smaller Cable companies for cheaper rates, less bureaucracy and faster service. To my surprise, I called embarq hesitantly, and the sales rep was honest & friendly. The reasons I was convinced and signed up:

1. I could use any DSL Modem, didn't have to buy their $50 one!
2. Max deposit was $25 after credit check which just required name and social (They didn't want my blood group).
3. Connection fee as $15.
4. Only 1 year contract. (I had recently talked to Dish Network, which made Embarq seem like an old pal).
5. $29.99 for 1.5 Megs, $34.99 for 3 Megs, $39.99 for 10 Megs.

Awesome pricing. They will take 4 days to turn it on. No one is going to come to my house to installing anything.

I called on the day of my service, customer service picked up in one ring, she said they start service at 7pm, told me how to fix my old modem to work with Embarq, and promised to call me at 7pm today!

Compare that to the Northland Cable I was signing up for, $50 connection fee + Modem, and I think 2 Megs was $43.99!!

Shows wives are not always wrong!

You don't have to have a phone line to get these prices? It's not an introductory rate that eventually goes up say, after one year?

I'm almost certain that is just introductory pricing.

I'd still like to know if this offer is truly for naked DSL or if some form of phone line is required.

Also, if it's introductory offer, is it renewable? I recall CenturyTel offering a deal for $40 10 meg DSL for 1 year; after that, it would go up to about $60...that said, if you renewed your contract at the end of the year, you could keep the $40 price.

I'm wondering if it's the same thing for this plan. *Shrugs*

It doesn't appear to be actual "naked" DSL...that is, DSL without dial tone. From what I understand, you get dial tone and can make 911 calls.

That is different than real "naked", which doesn't have dial tone at all (like mine).

Ahh, so you'll still have to pay for the phone line.

911 still works though, I presume?

No, nothing works. I get dead air if I connect a phone.

Thanks for the info. Finally able to drop the landline after several years of being forced to pay for one just to get DSL. Unfortunately nothing faster than 1.5/512 here in this part of TX.

I have Naked DSL, and the phone still has a dial tone, but is restricted to 911 calls only. However I do get incoming calls, mostly from telemarketers, so I connected a fax machine to it.

Just signed up about a week ago for the Embarq 3.0MB "Pure Broadband" for $34.99, for one year, in Winona Lake, IN (574). But I haven't gotten mine working yet. What didn't help is that I obviously had no phone service, so I didn't even know if the line worked or they turned on the service when they said they would. Finally dug up an old cordless phone and plugged it in... I do get dial tone, but can supposedly only call 911. However, here is the interesting part- I can receive calls They didn't even technically tell me my phone number, but I noticed that my account number looked suspiciously like a local number. Sure enough it was. HOpefully I don't get some weird charge for receiving calls.... can't imagine that I would.

Anyway, I still don't have the DSL working. Called Embarq support and spent 30 minutes on the line with a nice support rep. They were unable to figure out the problem. You could tell they're new to naked DSL because she would questions like "why are you calling from a cell phone" Me:"I don't have a land line" Her: "Why don't you have a land line?" etc. But that's ok. Anyway, they're sending someone to my house, and supposedly that's not supposed to cost anything... It better not! I do have dial-tone, so that would seem to indicated that there's no problems with my wiring, etc.

I hope it get resolved soon because for now, I'm paying two ISP's! (Comcast is my current providor... it works fine, I just wanted to save $30 since I don't really need 6MB and the super basic phone service)

Hopefully the tech that goes out can help out. Let me know if you need my assistance.

Thanks Joey- the technician was able to get it working yesterday. Turns out I had some issues with my wiring. So the tech disconnected all the other jacks (since I only need DSL) and fixed some wiring and that did it. Seems to be working fine now. Just have to wait and see how the billing goes- hopefully there won't be too many taxes/fees, etc.

So, how much are the total start up costs? I called this AM inquiring about this Pure internet.. and they have me 1.5 Mbps for 29.99 and 3Mbps for 34.95- however, they tried to tell me 54.95 originally for the 34.95 until I told them I was looking at their internet page and it showed 29.99- and they then said something about promotional discount or something and told me that was for 1.5 and gave me the price for the 3... however they just gave me the activation fee- $15 and the ship/hand fee- $14.95, so I said it would be around $50 for me to start up correct, and he said yes.. but now I saw somebody say something about buying a $50 modem too..??? Which was not mentioned in my conversation... so would it be $100 to start up? And, do they just mail it out to me, or does someone come and set it up for me??

Maybe I can explain. There's a standard $15 activation fee. We can provide the modem to you in a few different ways. First we see if you're qualified to receive a 660R for free. If you don't qualify you can lease one for $4.95 per month. If you qualify for the free modem, you have the option to upgrading to a 660HW (modem+wireless router) for $49.95. In either case if you get a modem from us there's a $14.95 shipping and handling fee. Any equipment you get from us we will provide 24/7 tech support for.

You also have the option of providing your own modem, but we don't provide support for it as our agents are only trained on our equipment. You would only pay the activation fee in this scenario. You should just ask the rep specifically what modem you are getting and/or what your options are. If you get a modem from us it's shipped via UPS and will arrive the day the DSL is activated. They should also be able to give you an estimate on what your first bill is. It's all there, just ask if they don't tell you. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Might be a dumb question, but let's say ARhodes gets an Embarq DSL modem from a friend (or CL, ebay, etc)... would support be provided then?

Just a curiosity question...

Yeah I would think so. It all boils down to our agents are only trained on the equipment we provide. And if it's our equipment, theres no reason we can't provide support for it. Hope that helps!
