how is hostgator as a web host?

i was reading this blogpost that was linked on another forum, a lot of people said that hostgator is the best and they are all hosted with them since they don't run large sites.

what are your thoughts on this and here is the blogpost in question »webuildup.com/2009/07/what-is-th···eb-host/

thanks

I would personally stay away from the 'unlimited' thing, but if you are going to have a small site, a web host like hostgator would be fine. There are a lot of web hosts out there as large as host gator, if not larger who do a great job too.

I would watch out in that blog though, all of his links are affiliate links, that's probably why the blogger is praising them so much, to get more affiliate links/sign ups under his name.

I use HostGator for a small website for a club I run and they are great. No problems ever.

That said it depends on what you want to use them for. You get what you pay for. I am always amazed by people that try to get this cheap hosting and then run a major business with it. If you were going to run a taxi service would buy the cheapest car you could find? No. You would buy the best heavy duty car you could find because your business will depend on it. Buying cheap hosting and then running a business is the same thing. Its like buying a cheap car and then being surprised when it breaks down when you run it 14 hrs a day every single day and put hundreds of miles on it.

So far (years) they have been great for my small club site with few users. A great deal if you have a small site and cost is the major factor. Good bang for the buck.

I've been with Hostgator for almost a year now, so far I've been very satisfied and their support team is one of the finest in the business, very responsive. I have several Joomla sites, a PHPbb forums and a wordpress site all work flawlessly, so far I haven't experienced any down time.

My father looked at hostgator and 1and1 to build and host a small website for him for a consulting business he is starting. He is about as technical as a loaf of bread, and found that for him 1and1 answered his questions in a way he could understand.

YMMV though.

Whatever works for you, I've found Hostgator support to be outstanding and the peer support forums a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
I signed up with 1&1 back in the summer of 2003 and while my site generally worked the problems came when I called or emailed support for me they had the worst support I've encountered. I canceled my account last fall but they still hold my domain name hostage for some reason.

Thanks

Steve

I've been with Hostgator now for I don't know how long, I think 5 years or more. A hiccup once a year or less, but it's usually fixed quickly.

I'd recommend them without a problem.

I've been with Hostgator for over a couple years now, and there was an incident awhile back, where somehow a mass-mailer php script got on one of my lesser-used domains, so I didn't catch it. Though shortly after noticing my e-mail stopped receiving, I got a phonecall from hostgator, telling me that there was a script on my site that was causing a disturbance.

I called them back, and the nice tech helped me find the script that was doing the mass-mailing. I promptly removed it, considering he said it had done over 20,000 e-mails in the past couple hours or something along those lines (It might not have been that high, but I can't remember.)

I later modified the script to simply write everything that was sent out to a txt file along with the posters IP address (Disabled the actual mail() function, so to the end user it seemed like it was still spitting out e-mails), then put it back online. Within 2 days I got about 100 IP addresses that were trying to use it, I banned them from all my websites using htaccess, along with from my own personal server as to never have to deal with them again. I've seen them trying to access occasionally, so they are stupid enough to keep using their same IP's.

Anyway, I enjoy Hostgator for my current needs. And anything heavy I program in PHP, I simply run on my own server at home.

Hosts who offer features which are "unlimited" tend to oversell, there is no such thing such "unlimited" really, I would be careful, but some of the big companies are good, have not heard any horror stories about hostgator anyway. Another issue to keep in mind is that large hosters might not have as much time for each and every customer, which means, some waiting time when opening a support ticket for example....

I used to host my services with HostGator. After the initial 3 months they claimed my support desk was using to many resources. They said I had to switch to another account which would run me $75 per month. I went ahead and switched. After a while on that plan they told me the same story and said I needed a dedicated server. A dedicated server mind you because my support desk of about 25 max users was using to many resources.

Long story short, I ended up leaving HostGator. Most of my issues I did go over theirh ead directly to Brent whom owns HostGator. If you want anything done right, I would highly recommend you email Brent Oxley directly.

Yeah, but who wants to email the owner of such a large company all the time. General support should be just as capable.

IMO, you would have been fine with your own VPS....

Any site that says unlimited anything is a liar. Do you want to do business with liars? I mean what is the local grocery store could lie on your ingredients.

Use you brain when you buy something. The cheapest route is pretty much never the best one.

Also try to buy local, this is always better for your community and helps spread money around. This is much better then giving it to corporate scams.

Nope, but we all do. Every company lies ... its called commercials.

They do! And if you think they don't then you have too much faith in the system.

I do. That's why I went with HostGator. A fair product for a fair price. I ended up having fair results. That's why I also don't believe my local store.

Often true. But HostGator is not the cheapest. And sometimes the cheapest route is the best. Depends on the situation. And then sometimes the situation changes and you have to reevaluate.

Yeah, better to buy $300 jeans from a local "seamstress" than to buy Levis. LOL

I wouldn't say they lie, I would call it manipulation, or stretching the truth. Commercials usually REALLY stretch the truth though.
