[AT&T] Automatic hour time change

During a trip to Wyoming and the black hills of South Dakota last week both the time on my cell (Nokia 2610) and my wife's (Motorola RAZR) would advance and later decrease by an hour periodically even though we never left the Mountain time zone.

The first time we were in Casper, WY it happened to the RAZR. Later it frequently occurred in Rapid City, SD area to both our phones. Both spots are quite a few miles into the Mountain time zone. Is it possible that that an errant cell signal from a tower in the Central time zone could cause the time to automatically change or could something else have been happening?

You get out into the desert, or on top of a mountain, signals can travel farther then expected, so yes, your phone was bouncing between towers in different time zones.

I threw out the map a long time ago. Now I follow my own direction!

I used to live someplace where my carrier said I wouldn't have coverage from their maps except from roaming analog partners years ago, and I where I lived on the hill allowed me to use my phone with a non-roaming digital signal. If I ever went down the hill I was back on analog roaming.

This is a common problem for people living on the border of states, but it's a very real problem who live on the border of canada when people's calls get reported as roaming when simply their call is grabbed by a tower across the border instead of the local towers in the country they are in. To me this is where I consider it fraud, if you actively have to prevent your phone from roaming on towers that will charge you roaming fees then they need to resolve the issue by making all the towers near the border immune to roaming charges. Back before all the plans were nationwide if somebody picked up towers from the neighboring state they might be charged roaming when their phone just picked up the wrong tower.

My hourly rates:
$25 per hour.
$35 per hour if you want to watch.
$45 per hour if you want to help.
$75 per hour if you tried to fix it, and failed.
$125 per hour if you called tech support, and didn't fix the issue while making things worse

I don't know anything about the Nokia but your wife could set her Razr to not update from the cellular network.

Initial setup > Time and Date > Auto Update > off.

Att can block your phone from grabbing mexico or canadian towers in that exact situation.
