| [AT&T] International calling on AT&T and iPhone
I'm now on AT&T. I used to be with Cingular and then for a while with AT&T. When I would travel I would call AT&T and set up some kind of international voice plan for like 5 bucks and then cancel when I got back. I was told that I had to do that. Now I'm traveling to Jamaica next week. Can I just land there and start using my iPhone? I'm turning data off. I only want to be able to send or receicve calls. |

Think of it as pay per use which is a higher per minute fee or pay a monthly fee to get a lower per minute use. That's what I thought. However, looking at ATT's website it doesn't seem like they give you a "discount" off the roaming rate anyway. I'll just take my chances. I'll have to make one or two calls anyway for a few minutes. Shouldn't be much. |

| I use Skype to call home when I'm out of the country. 2.5¢ a minute.
But there's something to be said for being able to be reached on your usual number that everyone knows. For that, the best solution is at&t international roaming. It's not cheap, but at least you can be reached.
For the OP, if you're not taking a laptop with you, but your hotel has wifi, you can use the new iPhone Skype app with wifi at that 2.5¢ rate. |

The $5 additional plan reduces the roaming rate. Remember to turn off data roaming on your iPhone so you do not get a huge data bill. |

| reply to obeythelaw well, i called up and they "activated" international roaming since it wasn't on my plan (i'm a "new" att subscriber even though I had cingular for years but just came back from verizon). they don't charge a fee to have international roaming but if you wanted to they can add another service that reduces rate. For me, there is no reduced rate for jamaica anyway. So it looks like i'm good to go. As far as i know my hotel does have wifi. i'm just gonna turn wifi off and data roaming off on my iphone. i don't want to have to deal with emails or texts anyway while i'm on vacation. |
