Friend Asked Me For Some Unix Help

But I'm not really the guy to ask, for my knowledge is fundamental in that department of Unix.

He's using the crontab utility to schedule a few jobs.

"January 2nd at 5:40am, every year."
40 5 2 */1 *

And

"On the 15th and 28th of each month, at 6:00am, for the entire year"
0 6 15,28 * *

As well as

"Every (10) minutes, (24) hours per day, for the entire year."
*/10 * * * *

Does this look correct?

Thanks.

"*/1" is kind of redundant. It basically means "every one of this value column repeated each 1 interval". In other words, "*/1" is the equivalent of "*". If you meant "at 1 and only 1", you should simply put "1" in a column. The "/" notation is generally when you want to set an interval count of greater than one. For example, if you wanted something to happen every other hour, you'd put "*/2" in the hours column.
