| [Other] need help with my horrible ISP service
So i've got 10mbps cable with Service Electric. I use it mostly for playing competitively on xbox live, and most days my connection will be fine. But sometimes, for a couple of days, my connection will seem to have alot of packet loss. or at least thats what i think it is. its not a consistently laggy connection, but it'll be completely unsteady. It's so extremely frustrating to deal with and try to diagnose and fix. i'll restart my modem numerous times, and check and retighten all my cable plug ins but to no avail. I'm usually stuck having to just wait it out for a few days till it fixes itself, but Service Electric is no help. i'll call customer service and they'll say my line is fine... please help me! |

| reply to hdinh1985 It can be difficult troubleshooting end-to-end performance problems.
What type of connection is this? DSL and Cable modems typically provide access to line stats. That indicates condition of physical connection. Since your provider stated line is fine problem is probably elsewhere.
Try doing traceroute (tracert in Windows) to stable sites like Broadband Reports and your favorite gaming server. Do it when connection is working well and when you are having problems. You can also do the line quality test from the tools page: »/tools
Wouldn't hurt to do a speed test. Speed should be close to advertised speed.
When you experience these problems are any applications on your PC or other PCs on LAN accessing the Internet?
As Matt posted not sure what you mean by "completely unsteady." Are you only having problems with particular game server or the Internet in general.

| reply to hdinh1985 what i mean by "unsteady" is that while playing a game, the connection will seem smooth for a little while then i'll get huge spikes that'll "teleport" me forward a few feet. I can tell the difference between my stable connection and unstable, not to mention typical lag. What it looks like when i'm surfing the web on my computer is much the same. Web surfing will seem smooth for a little, then i'll suddenly get huge pauses in loading then back to normal again... i just dont get it. |

| reply to hdinh1985 i get home from work around 7:30 when i get on. so yes i guess it does happen around prime time... but my wife will say it'll happen during the day too. but not always.... this week it only happened on tuesday. We also live in an apartment compex, so maybe its from sharing it with other residence? if its network congestion, how does one go about fixing it? possibly tweaking the connection? if so, where should i start? |

| reply to hdinh1985 Network congestion is the result of an over sold circuit. When it happens, try some of the test tools here »/tools to see if you can find out where it is. Then maybe your ISP can move you to a different circuit or less congested equipment. -- RIP my babys Buttons 1/15/94-2/9/07 & Beamer 7/24/08, Buttons, Buttons video, Beamer

| said by tim_k :hen maybe your ISP can move you to a different circuit or less congested equipment. while this can happen, it will take persistance on the part of the op and possibly those in the neighborhood around him. usually dsl and cable technologies are deployed on a "neighborhood" basis, so one co/rt or one node/cmts is fed using a single link. if that link is oversold, then it will require an entire network redesign/addition. usually isps don't do this unless there is a large demand for it and/or they start losing customers in that area.
