MS Entourage problems

I'm not a fan of running MS products on apple, but boss insists of having an Outlook-wanna-be Entourage. Problem with it is that it has problem retaining information regarding downloaded emails.
In nutshell. We have pop3 accounts on Linux server and we store ALL emails there, so in settings we use 'leave messages on server' and don't delete. The problem in this case is that from time to time Entourage just redownloads all messages from the server, often creating duplicates.

This sounds like a perfect reason to change your server and clients to IMAP.

PoP3 was never meant to store messages on the server, that is what IMAP was designed for. True PoP3, has work arounds, which are you doing, but it is not 100%, as you are aware.

The problem with IMAP that we have large number of clients and connection is not reliable enough to handle such requests. We did a trial and frequent freezes due to IMAP access made email a pain in the rear. All our computers use Outlook except for that one Mac. Personally I would use Evolution or Apple Mail, but can't do much about it.

Another solution you can try is using Parallels 4 with Outlook installed. I find this to be faster and less annoying than using Entourage, particularly in an Exchange environment. I know you're not using Exchange but you can stop some of the reliability problems you're currently having by just using Outlook. Parallels also isn't terrible on system memory and has terrific integration with OS X.

YMMV, but it works really well for us on the Macs we have in the office.
