Unable to open DOS program in XP

I have Win XP Pro and Firefox 3.0.11
For some years now I have been running a DOS program (containing data entries) from a shortcut on my desktop with no problem. Now I suddenly find that when attempting to open it I get the attached error message. I also get this error when I attempt to open the exe file directly from the program folder.
I have eventually managed to open the program by installing and using Dosbox but would like to be able to open it directly from my shortcut as I have always done before.
Anyone know why I should suddenly get this error message?
I had done a reg clean some days ago, but I've restored the removed entries with no result.
Thanks for any advice.

Just checking, have you tried running the program from cmd.exe which is the nt command prompt?

I'd say do system restore/restore your image to before this happened, and stop using these registry cleaners.

Let start with some basics, I know some of these settings are stored in the registry, but is there an actual .pif shortcut on your desktop? You could try deleting this shortcut, and trying to make a new one, but also look for a .pif file in the folder the actual program is contained in. If needed windows will make them again, but I recall .pif was the old shortcut format for dos based programs in previous operating systems.

I deleted the shortcut on my desktop and created another one from the .exe file that starts the program. This shortcut also comes up with the same error.
There are no files with a .pif extension in the folder.
There is no mention of pif anywhere on the shortcut or exe file, but it is visible in the error message. (Info.pif)
'Info' is the name I gave to the folder containing the program.

are you confident that the machine is malware/spyware free?

My AV is kept up to date and I also did a full adware/spyware scan two days ago. I'll run another scan in case.

Hi Cudni. Yes I do have Comodo. From those posts it looks like it may be the latest version of Comodo (3.10) that is causing the problem then. I'll try reverting to 3.9 and see what happens.

Thanks for the help BlitzenZeus and Cudni.
You nailed it Cudni - I reverted to Comodo 3.9 and now the DOS program is working as usual. Looks like it's a bug that Comodo have to sort out.
Appreciate the input.

wow nice find. those types of unique issues are always extremely hard to diagnose, especially with seemingly completely unrelated programs
