| Average packets per hour for Hughes net?
Ok, I'm not a Geek and I don't understand all this FAP stuff and MB stuff. When I check my system status the transmission comes in 'packets' - so what is the normal amount of these by a home PC?
I ask this because my Desktop has already been found to be a hyjacked Zombie. Found this out because we began to get knocked off HN for going over threshold every time I even plugged that PC into the system. Didn't even have to turn it on to get wacked.
The same friendly Geek went through my work laptop as well. It wasn't a Zombie - but did have some problems.
So now, I've had no problems with these two PCs on line for two weeks now. Then my young stepson comes back. Hughes net went down almost instantly the day he arrived. I had to unplug the satellite overnight and take the WiFi router off of it. Because the kid told me that even when he pushes the button on his Acer to turn off the card - it'll come back on by itself not long after... Sigh, another Zombie to fix....
So what is the average # of packets per hour/day? This will help me notice a zombie before I'm knocked of HN again... Thanks! |

| Let's say you're on the 200MB per day plan. Minus the 5 hours of FAP exempt time, you're talking a 19 hour day. So if you are averaging much more than 10-11MB per hour (this doesn't take into account the bucket refill rate) you're probably going to exceed the FAP.
Translating that into packets can get a little tricky, as packet sizes can fluctuate. But if you go with a constant MTU of 1500 (1500 bytes in a packet) you should probably start worrying at about 7000-8000'ish packets per hour. But again, this assumes a clean steady connection at a constant MTU and doesn't include the FAP bucket refill rate.
If my math is wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct me.
What kinda of modem are you using? You can get real-time usage rate info with hnFAPmon if you're using one of the supported modems. If you're using the HN9000 you are SOL as far as hnFAPmon is concerned.
Might be easier to secure your boxes rather than doing all this math |

| reply to lr_peckyahoocom You did not say what modem you have.
You can not track usage via packets.
You can go here and get your usage by hour.
