| My wired internet.....drops?
Hello,
I am starting to wonder if it is my router that is faulty or my modem.
I will be browsing the internet. (just happened to me when registering on this site) and my internet will cease to work. I can get it up and running again by unplugging the router and modem, plugging the modem in and letting it start up, and then plugging in the router.
Also, this is very annoying because sometimes my families computer's internet will drop but mine will continue to function. Mostly. I can still use Msn, WoW, Hamachi, Steam but I CANNOT browse the internet. Anyways, this makes me have to get off my comfortable chair and reset the modem/router.
Please help me with my problem. (I am also having wireless problems. Check my post in the wireless networking section) |

Have you tried to bypass your router entirely by directly plugging it into the modem? |

| reply to nuclearsword It helps to know who your provider is, if you are using cable dsl or fios. It helps to know which router you are using, which firmware (if stock or some third party). It also helps to know which OS you are using.
When this happens, can you still access the home page of your router? Can you access your cable modem web page? Are you able to ping beyond your LAN? Is the failure for HTTP URL's, or for everything internet? -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| @imitation I will try your idea tonight while the family is sleeping and see if the problem occurs.
@pandora I guess I was a little hasty with the post.
Router: DI-624 revision E1 Firmware 5.00 (stock)
Provider: Broadstripe, cable. I dont know the exact speed, however I often see speeds around 1.6mb/s
OS: Pc1- Xp home Pc2-Xp Home
I can access the routers page (I remember because I changed some settings and was unable to browse the internet in another tab)
The modems webpage? Hmm I haven't seen that since the cable guy came and upgraded us from dialup. How would I find the modems IP? It is not printed on the modem itself.
I must be able to ping beyond my LAN becuase I can continue to talk over Ventrilo, host/join games on Steam, transfer files/play games in hamachi, and lastly, play Wow.
As for the urls, I probably haven't tried anything other than Http, I'll write myself a note to test that next time the problem occurs. |

| That helps some. If your LAN is working, and you can access your router. Then you have some stability.
Most cable modems provide a web page. My cable modems home page is at »192.168.100.1/ it helps if you can find it as there is usually information about your cable connection available from the modem (voltage levels, noise, and possibly a history of connection issues it has encountered). Try the link above and see if you get to your cable modem.
Do you use Internet Explorer or another browser? It helps to know if the problem is with IE or with all browsers. Have you run Windows Update regularly? Is your Windows XP currently fully updated? -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| That Ip address did work.
These seem to be the only two useful things I could see.
Operation Config: »img90.imageshack.us/img90/7139/o···nfig.jpg
And an event log which I copied into notepad to get the whole thing. »img90.imageshack.us/img90/23/eventlog.jpg
I use Firefox religiously and have tried IE while the problem was happening and it did not work.
Windows update is on automatic and I see the little update thing in the tray every once in a while. Same with the other PC. |

| If you can, try to check your modems signal levels. Here is a place to look and see what range they should be in (from the Comcast HSI FAQ) - »Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »What should my Signal Levels be? -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

| Okay, my downstream Power level seems to be a little odd but my upstream seems fine.
Downstream Receive Power Level : 0.1 dBmV
Upstream transmit Power Level : 41.0 dBmV
I couldn't find anything about the SnR levels.
Oh, I tried running straight off the modem last night and had no connection issues. This also may have been a lucky night, I don't know. |

1 edit | It's tough when a network problem is intermittent. You'll eventually need to try and resolve the issue between your router and modem.
For a replacement router suggestion, try (if you can afford it) a Linksys WRT54GL. This will permit you to install a Linux firmware variant in the future (DD-WRT, Tomato, Open-WRT).
Good luck!
P.S. I'm assuming you have an AV suite of some sort, and an enabled firewall. I'm also assuming your XP systems were kept up to date (as you have indicated). If either of these aren't correct, then I'd also investigate a potential infection as a possibility. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |
