Newbie Setup Question

What is the best way to connect my Vonage V-Portal adapter to the internet? Do I have to worry about my adapter getting hacked? I noticed the password on the V-Portal can only be 15 characters long, letters/numbers and upper/lowercase, so I am a little concerned about putting it in front of my router, directly connected to the modem if it can be accessed from the WAN by bad guys on the net.
