| ONT/Cat6 & Actiontech router I am having FIOS installed mid July and I have Cat6 run connected to my router should i call prior to install date to have ethernet port enabled? I will have triple play so I will be using the actiontech router for TV can i also use it as separate router? Basically I live in 2 story house and I want each floor to have separate LAN's. | |

Most CSRs will tell you you need a coax install for FIOS-TV, which is not correct. Most install techs will provision your ONT for cat5 WAN IF the cat5 wiring is already in place.

You can put one or more routers behind the Actiontec to create additional network(s) that can not see each other, but share the WAN connection. | |

1 edit | Sounds like he wants to two ethernet outlets. One on the first floor, and one on the second floor. He probably has computers on both floors, and rather than running the cat5 cable all over the house from top to bottom, he wants to be able to plug into a router on each floor, as in two outlets and two routers, which I don't think you can do.
If you have 1 router plugged into the upstairs outlet, I don't think you can plug a router into the downstairs one. | |

On the first floor i have coaxial outlets RF6 which i was thinking of placing actiontech router on this floor. Is this feasible having ethernet port enabled on ONT and then using Actiontech router enabled also ?

It makes no differences if the Actiontec is connected via coax or cat5.
If I understand what you are asking, is this:
Connect the 2nd flr router's WAN port to a LAN port on the Actiontec.
Leave the Actiontec on it's default subnet of 192.168.1.x.
Configure the 2nd floor router to use the 192.168.2.x subnet.
Without explicit routing entries, PCs on on the 2nd floor won't see PCs on 1st floor and visa-versa. | |

In other words, getting 2 ethernet outlets is basically meaningless because you'll only be able to use one of them at a time. As More Fiber said, your second router has to be connected to your Actiontec router.
So, to answer your question, NO, you cannot have two ethernet outlets both connected to separate routers at the sametime. | |

| There is one other option, if you want the two floors completely isolated and that is a business account with static IP addresses ($). This would require a cat5 install.

| Re: ONT/Cat6 & Actiontech router Basically this what i am going to do connect my cat6 to ONT which will be connected to my router WAN port (WRT54GL) this will be second floor. First floor connect to actiontech connected via coax and the computers will connect via ethernet ports on actiontech router.
I do not care to have multiple WAN ip addresses or if they are static or dynamic.
Will Verizon allow this configuration. | |

| Just us a wireless a access point where the ActionTec is. Make it a wireless N AP. Then get a wireless Bridge for the second floor.
I use a couple of the Dlink DAP 1522 units. They c an be used as an AP or a bridge with the flip of a switch. I have one setup as an AP with 5GHz N and one setup as an access point.
I easily get over 100mbs speeds on my internal network and internet access speed is identical to my wired connections speed on my 50/20 tier., | |

I have over 50 devices on my gigabit network and have no problems.
If you really want two LANs and do not want to run any wires, you can still use the wireless bridge and then connect a router to one of the wireless bridge ports to create a second LAN.
It will work and you don't have to run any wires, except from the wireless Bridge to the second router which would be sitting next to the wireless bridge.
And if you want to restrict access, you just need to restrict the IP address you give to the second router so the devices on that Secondary LAN can't access the Primary LAN. | |
