How to get rid of it?
Kill it via bee/wasp spray or folded newspaper. Better yet is if you can open some windows and shoo it outside.
Only time I will purposefully kill bees is if they're building a nest in my yard or on my house. |

You might want to call in a professional exterminator, if in fact there are hundreds of them. If you go about trying to eradicate them yourself and they get mad and go after you, then you really have a problem. | reply to jchambers28 it is just a regular wasp. watch and see where the nest is and after dark go eradicate them. the vast majority will be "home" after dark and you simply spray them with a can or two of wasp spray. do not use a light to see them, they will fly off. find the nest during teh day and then spray it after dark. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |

| reply to jchambers28 Thats a Red Wasp, the stings are very very painful and more toxic then a bee. Not only that, but they can sting multiple times each. So if you have such a large nest, I suggest you do what Davidg mentioned and go after them at night time. If its thousands, then call a professional. Whatever you do.. Don't piss them off! -- www.pointofexistence.com |

| reply to jchambers28 I agree you need to find the nest and spray it at night. You don't need any special wasp spray. Ant spray works just as well. Wasps are just glorified ants with wings. -- "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and generally accepted accounting principles. |

It only takes a little bit to drop and kill them quickly, unlike ant and roach spray that pisses them off first.
I have a huge problem with paper wasps at my place. They build nests everywhere there is a cavity or overhang, and sometimes where there isn't. These are a European variant that first appeared in the US in the 1980s and have been replacing the native wasps, which were not as aggressive. The native wasps also tended to build their nests in more out-of-the-way places.
I don't normally advocate randomly killing things, but I treat these wasps with extreme prejudice. They can and have made my life miserable on several occasions.
I keep cans of the spray out in my sheds and shop and other areas around the yard. I had not driven my truck in a week or so, and when I opened the door, there was a large nest in the doorjamb area with a bunch of angry wasps. I'm tired of it. I see them, they die.
Home Depot carries this spray in the Spectracide brand, which works very well. I normally go through a case of it every year.
Ace hardware currently has the Raid brand shown above on a rebate program. $2.99/can with a $2.00 per can rebate (limit 4). Stock up! -- We were taking a vote when the ground came up and hit us. |

As Dave said, set the time aside to just sit outside and watch where they go. Paper wasps should be hanging under eaves, decks, garage ceilings... I've treated wasp colonies (not paper) that found openings into my vinyl siding -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. Bleah |

| reply to jchambers28 If they are invading an enclosed structure, such as a shed, I have found these hanging strips are effective at discouraging them from building nests in there. I replace them every year in the spring. -- We were taking a vote when the ground came up and hit us. |

| reply to jchambers28 Spray is best, get the one that foams so it can stick.
BUT look and make sure you know where they are going in during the day, then AT NIGHT (best for attic spaces btw)go into area and then spary the holy hell out of it. I also use a flying insect killer just in case. DON'T use a flashlight if possibly since they will be attracted to it and you, thinking it's daylight but if you do need a flashlight use a red filter. Leave the saturated nest for a day, to poison those which come back to it. But then remove the nest. |

ONE of those little ba$tards got me right on the ring finger joint two weeks ago. Not only did my finger AND hand AND upper arm swell to gigantic proportions, I also had a bit of a allergic reaction and started to get face and airway swelling - first time that ever happened.
