[rant] Apple Care Warranty (Store)

I have a 24" c2c Imac that the video is failing. It will get a pixelated line or square box all the way across the screen. When I googled this, it seems to be a problem with the Nvidia graphics card heating up or just plain wore out. No big deal, I have warranty till 2010. I took it to the Apple store to be repaired and two days later they called and said that they can not complete the work on it due to cigarette smoke and nicotine build up in it. I was told that it was a hazard to the tech's health. I kindly said ok and told them that I would come to pick it up. I called another store and told them the deal and they said that they would work on it and repair it with the Apple Care warranty. It's setting there now being repaired, or at least I hope so. I just dropped it off today. Have you ever heard of someone not repairing a computer due to smoke build up? I understand the risks of nicotine, but I read the warranty and found nothing of that issue except abuse and neglect. Does that mean anyone that smokes around their computer does not have a warranty? Thanks for letting me vent...

Well lets just hope and pray that the tech does not drop dead while working on it..

Even as anti-smoking as i am, i think that is ridiculous..

Apple refused to work on it. I ended up taking it to another store that honors Apple Care warranty. I understand the risks of nicotine and looked it up on OSHA and they said to use gloves and a mask if concerned. I rebuild pc's all the time for people and I can't imagine that it is any more dirty setting on a desk than packed in a hole under a desk.

Quit smoking, it's bad for your health as well as the computers I've seen the insides of computers from homes that have smokers, it's DISGUSTING, and they and their house didn't smell or look too good either.

I agree on the quit smoking. I have been working on it, but haven't quit completely yet. I will quit though.

Sorry to say, but no you wont..

Give us an update on if the other shop completes the work.. if they do, ask them about it when you pick it up and let us know what they say.

It's VERY tough, at least you're trying and that's a step in the right direction!

I do hope they get it repaired for you, it would be silly to not repair it just because of that.

Did some Googling and it seems to be a problem with the Nvidia 7300Gt video card. They say that he 24" Imac is a separate card and on all the rest (17"and 20")it is part of the Logic board. The cheapest price I found on line is 187.00 and me to do the work. We had a tech out a year ago and he replaced the dvd drive. In fact I had to go buy the super small torx drivers. I looked inside it then and it was clean and I still have the torx drivers. I would replace the card myself if warranty was out but it's not. I did the Chantix awhile back and quit for a few months and then fell off the bandwagon. While on it I would head to the kitchen and once there forget what I was after. Just going to have to go cold turkey this time. I was told they have tech's on site and would know something in a couple days. I don't know how long it will take to get the part in, if they have to order.

Chantix works, but really messes with your memory. Me and another guy at work took the stuff at the same time and would forget what the conversation was about. Kinda funny after you think about it. Going to go cold turkey this time. Just stay away from me for a dew days..lol

Personally, I think the excuse is BS. I've repaired many computers and there is much more junk building inside them, much more that nicotine and whatever else the excuse. I'm very anti-smoking, but with other stuff I've seen inside - I'd be more scared of that!
