problem with xp clean install (multi boots detected)

Hi can you ps help me? Sorry if my wording is not too good, as i am no good at explaining/writing.

My father needed to have a clean install as his maxtor 250gb sata HD was minimal on space, so what i did was buy a 2nd sata hd (320gb barracuda) to backup his docs and chose to instal xp on the maxtor drive again. So i used the original Mesh xp disc which came with pc as this had the sata drivers inc and did not want to go through hassle of 'F6 load' as there is no floppy drive on pc. Anyway i deleted 2 existing partitions on maxtor which were fat32 and nfts (fat32 is the mesh back up i think) and then i did the long format as opposed to quick format. So Everything installs well but when it reboots i get a multiboot menu telling me there are 3 operating systems on HD (strange) Anyways I chose 1st OS and all seems OK, but heres my problem, how can there be 2 other OS when i deleted and formatted HD? And is there a quick way to delete these other OS or will i have to do it all again?
Many thanks
Note: In disc managment the maxtor drive is only showing as 1 partition 'C' and has only 200gb...
Also I connected other data sata drive without a problem.

Re: problem with xp clean install (multi boots detected)

If you have Windows on another hard drive it may have been picked up by the install.

On your boot drive (the C disk) there should be a hidden file called "boot.ini" it will look something like the following -

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

*************

The easiest way to change boot.ini (and safest) is to run "msconfig" from the run screen (start -> run -> msconfig). Go to the boot.ini tab then select the version of Windows you want to boot, set the timer to 0 and it should boot that and without any noticeable delay.

It is also possible to directly edit the boot.ini file which is a hidden system file on your boot (C:) drive.

Generally it isn't a good idea to edit this file directly, unless you know what you are doing, and are prepared to repair a potentially dead system drive.

Yes i did actually have both HD attached when i tried to first do a clean install and the OS installed on the Baracuda drive (2nd Sata) by mistake. I then removed the Baracuda drive and kept just the maxtor which went ok but for the 3 OS. ....What i cannot understand is i only attached the baracuda after the multiple OS problem! So how come it showed 3 OS on multiboot menu when only maxtor was attached?
PS i removed the jumpers on the baracuda as i wanted the maxtor as the 1st drive detected, is this OK?
Thanks
