Re: Running Windows 7 with older hardware

The reason I'm wanting to put 4 gigs is Windows 7 has the ability to pre-cache most used programs in any unused memory. The system itself may only use 2 gigs, but the other 2 gigs can be used for program loading.

I installed Win7 on a 1.6 GHz (Intel) Socket 478 with a 1GB of RAM and it ran well.

I've installed Windows 7 (32 bit beta) on an older PC with just 1 GB. I subsequently upgraded it to 1.5 GB. That did improve performance somewhat. I also have a newer PC which I bumped from 2 GB to 4 GB and ran the 32 and 64 bit beta and now the 64 bit RC on. The bump from 2 to 4 GB made almost no difference.

You shouldn't have trouble running Windows 7 on your PC, in my experience going from 2 to 4 GB doesn't affect overall system performance that much. At least not for the stuff I do.

I'm not sure why you would "need" 4Gb of ram for Win7. But Asus posts a memory list for each of their boards, showing the make/model and verified working configurations. (such as 2x1Gb, 4x512Mb, etc)

I'm wanting to run Windows 7 when it comes out. I know I will have to add more memory. Here is what I have.

AMD 64 3500+ CPU
Asus AV8 Deluxe
2x512 ram Dual Mode (OCZ PC400 3200)
Running Win XP Pro

My question is I remember that some boards had trouble using 1 gig memory cards in dual mode. I will need four gigs for Windows 7. Would I be OK using four 1 gig memory cards? What memory would you recommend?
