| The adapter won't help. By using Internet Connection Sharing, you could send the signal into a router to then be shared with other devices. I used to do it in the bad old days of dial-up.
It means leaving the primary computer on, though and ICS has its own idiosyncrasies that make using it less fun than using only a router. Can she request a "real" modem or will they allow her to use one she purchases?
