"It is clearly stated in our customer contracts that such services may not be used…There are two reasons for this – because the high level of traffic would hinder our network performance, and because if the Skype programme didn’t work properly, customers would make us responsible for it.”

Total BULL !! They don't want their customer paying airtime to skype instead of paying their own cell airtime..

Wow !

Ooh this thing is heating up.

I've said on other message boards that I can't wait for mobile access to be purely data-based and scrap these exorbitant rates for voice and text.

Look at the numbers:

4kbps compressed voice signal * 2 (up/down) * 60 seconds in a minute = 480 kilobits

A carrier might charge $0.25 for that (around here anyways, it might be slightly cheaper over there).

$0.25/480kb = $0.52/Mb = $4.17/MB or $4170/GB

Text messages are even worse, a $0.15 text message around here is about $750/MB or $750,000/GB.

I long for the day when we get a decent rate per GB and just use VOIP and IM. It seems the battle has begun.

Too bad the incumbents bought all of the new spectrum around here AFAIK. We're screwed.

My Evil Genius brain cells are brewing something sinister. In fact, I'm hoping Canadian providers will adopt the same policy here. They'll be helping me out.

Yes, that did sound insane.

Rocky, I might be picking your brains via PM very shortly.

Comparatively, mobile internet access goes for about $0.05 per MB or less.

Voice is over 80x more expensive than other data.

That's not entirely true. Globalive (owner of Yak) picked up a big chunk of the available spectrum, and there's a new player called DAVE too. I'm not optimistic that Quebecor has any incentive to differentiate itself from the incumbents, but hopefully one of the other two can generate some competition.

I have a lot to say about the state of the mobile industry in Canada, as well as telecom in general. We're getting ripped off, but hopefully change is on the horizon. The CAIP and companies like Teksavvy are part of that, and I'm optimistic that the new entrants in the mobile market will be too.

It's a bizarre mentality that finding a company like TSI, who actually seems to prioritize the welfare of their customers, seems strange and foreign.

Of course, $0.05 per MB is still obscene.

Like with my data plan on my iPhone/tethering:

GB 1-6: $5/GB
GB 7+: $30/GB

I can almost accept $5/GB considering the limited bandwidth of cellular technologies, but $30/GB is just insane. At least I won't have to worry about getting a bill for tens of thousands of dollars unless I try to leave the country. Enter the US and from what I remember my data costs increase by something like 500x

Oh yeah the roaming rates should be a crime. They're disgusting.

Well, the incumbents are working daily on snapping up the rest of the spectrum. My former ISP 'Look Communications' just got bought up by a Bell/Rogers co-op company called 'Inukshuk'...the only thing they wanted was Look's piece of the spectrum. Bell/Rogers will eventually divvy up Look's DSL customers and the spectrum, dissolve the co-op and mission accomplished. Of course, nobody in the government said boo about it.

That's why we switched to TekSavvy

Unlike Canada, the EU actually has a government that will act against this. Take the 3-strikes and you're off the internet ruling, they put a quash to that in a hurry.

Basically T-Mobile is just screaming to the E.U. - come regulate us please! Net neutrality bill in less than 12 months for wireless carriers on the way.

If that happened here, all 3 major carriers would have a press release with the same decision within minutes of each other. Michael Geist would be the only one freaking out (until Rogers or Bell or Telus buy Torstar - and silence him for good). The PR machine would be churning out BS in overtime on how good our wireless carriers are for protecting us from the virus laden Skype software!
