Now I haven't been there in 25 years, but I remember how just getting one block over might mean zig-zagging all over the place.
For people who travel a lot for work (sales reps, etc.) I can see how valuable these things are. I just find the nav systems amusing because I know A LOT of people who buy these (because I guess they are a current "toy), and the people hardly ever travel! And when they do, they always go to the same place.

I know I wouldn't. If you jailbreak your iphone you can download XGPS which works pretty damn well for being free especially since it also does voice nav. No complaints from me since I got it.

Yes, but don't you like to know where you are? Following turn by turn has never helped me actually have a good awareness of where I am, whereas always having that top-down view has helped me to get somewhere AND get my bearings for when I need to move around.

Mapquest and google maps have both lead to some interesting times getting around San Francisco before. I know at least one of them didn't indicate that 18th street magically disappears when you hit the castro and goes up about half a block. That was funny!

This particular street is a narrow one city street next to a catholic grade school.

I piss away a lot of money on services. I have no problem with my $180+ cable bill, the $75 AT&T bill for my iPhone, $80 for Sprint for my real cell service from Nextel and XM and Sirius, but no way would I pay an additional dime for subscription GPS. Why? I can get a Garmin or Tom Tom for a onetime cost. Personally I'm saving up the $1500 to get the Lincoln factory nav system put in my SUV. (That is after I upgrade to climate controled seating and xenon lighting)

I don't imagine that it will work for the Iphone, but MS had a free GPS ap for the MinMo phones that did turn by turn w/ real time tracking, movie times, weather, restaurants, etc. It did require a data plan. As far as ATT offering GPS, that has been around for atleast 3 years on their other smart phones for $9.99. Not sure if it requires a data plan though. |

So google is free and does not offer voice, turn by turn or navigation based on traffic, AT&T offers these things for $10 month. I'm not saying it's worth it... only that you did not post much of what makes the service different. Garmin XT has traffic for free.
