So who's going to line up to pay $9.99/mo for turn-by-turn?

I just got an email from AT&T about their new Navigator software with voice control. It's $9.99 a month for turn-by-turn service.

Who's actually going to pay this when one gets similar functionality (without voice control) from the Google Maps application? I mean, wow.

Has anyone tried it? is it worth our while? What do others think?

Really? Google Maps is going to get turn by turn? I hadn't heard that. I was waiting for the Tom Tom application, although most of these things don't work on the 1st gen iPhone...

Funny, I just read this article before I saw your post. I'll take a pass on another $10/month going to AT&T--they get enough from me already. Besides, my Prius will tell me where I'm going.

No, I don't mean that the Maps application will get turn-by-turn, but it already lists all the steps on your chosen path--I know, I've used it that way. Sorry if I confused.

I simply don't get why paying money for turn-by-turn is worth it.

Right, ok. I use that app all the time. Besides email and the phone, Maps is my most used app.

I think what will happen is AT&T will unleash this dog of an app, with its subscription, and it will be crushed by better apps that don't have the subscription model.

Same here. The maps app has saved me a few times when my GPS didn't have the address in in.

so $120 a year and I could get a Garmin for $200 and is WAY better than an iphone.

I don't have an iphone but I am curious based on this topic. What are the app subscription requirements? Could I subscribe to turn by turn for one month, cancel, and 2 months later subscribe again?

I use Garmin XT software on my cell for a couple of years now and there is no monthly charge or even cell / data connection needed. Ooooh you mean on iPhone .... too bad. The original post didn't say anything about iPhone ...

Because it's pretty much the only cellphone that gets discussed here.

Hate to burst your bubble, guys, but I sincerely doubt that you will be able to find a turn-by-turn capable GPS app without some sort of recurring charge attached. The need for vendors to supply their own map data, which they will need to keep updated, will necessitate a recurring charge. Even TomTom and Garmin charge for map updates.

$10/mo is not an unfair price to pay if you use the service frequently.

I know i'm gonna get whacked here. Had first gen Iphone, Goggle maps great service. Just picked up new Palm Pre Sprint nav included with service. Same as what ATT is going to use. No extra to be paid. TBH not a bad program but I want better.

Garmin XT. $99 for the software and current maps and then you update it whenever you want. I was looking for European maps for a friend's standalone Magellan unit and it was about $80 for map updates or other map regions.

I'm sorry but $10 per month is ridiculous. No car with built-in GPS navigation requires a monthly fee to use the GPS. If you want a map update you pay for it of course, but streets don't change THAT often - it's not required. My mom's car has a small YEARLY fee to XM for traffic nav data.

The Google Maps functionality is just fine. It shows me where I am and where I need to go. I don't need anything more than that. My car does have turn by turn but I actually use that less than my iPhone's google maps (easier to pick addresses and I can see traffic).

Word. I use the Google Maps App for finding addresses and then I type them into my Mio Move 500. No need for turn by turn on my iPhone and I don't have to worry about my Mio not having the address I'm looking for. Take that AT&T.

If you find $70/mo phone service reasonable, I'm sure $10/mo is pocket change. You probably pay >$150 a month for TV and who knows what for your other stuff!

Some people, like myself, don't watch TV or watch it so infrequently that downloading TV shows is a better deal. Just a little bit of an over-generalization, doncha think? I mean, I know tons of people who are paying $200-300/mo for family plan deals that don't involve an iPhone. Paying $70-90/mo for an iPhone is not that ridiculous and doesn't mean I'm rich, either.

The cost probably includes map licensing so that you can download maps to your device. Then, there's no data connection required whatsoever to use the service. My bets are on the app being so clunky to run that it'll crash half the time on the 3G and still feel sluggish on the 3GS. The iPhone wasn't really designed as a dedicated navigation unit and therefore it's hard to expect it to be as efficient as one.

I'll stick to my blue dot on the maps app. The places where I need the maps the most are places that have full 3G coverage (like in San Francisco or Berkeley).

I use both my tomtom and google maps on my iphone.

TomTom

Pros: its great for turn by turn directions and its a nicer, bigger, screen to do it on.

Cons: Weird way of entering addresses and you can't search for a place by name (like the burger joint your meeting people at).

Google Maps on iPhone 3GS -- its

Pros: Toss anything in and google will either find it or give your suggestions or ask you which of the ten you wanted to go to.

Cons: The GPS is a little off sometimes so you don't want to use it for making sure you are making the right turns just ahead.

What you fail to mention is that Navigator also adds real time routing based on traffic. So google is free and does not offer voice, turn by turn or navigation based on traffic, AT&T offers these things for $10 month.

I'm not saying it's worth it... only that you did not post much of what makes the service different.

I appreciate your point. Google Maps also shows traffic, though it doesn't route for traffic. You can look at the map and adjust by yourself for traffic jams....and not have to pay $10 a month.

Mapquest I feel has gone down hill over the past year or two. I have had multiple instances where they have mapped out a much longer route, have given wrong turns (left vs right) or had wrong street names. When I print out directions I use Google Maps.

Nahh, I know exactly where Pepe is coming from. We don't use Map Quest or Google Maps for the actual driving directions. We just look at a map, figure out where we have to go, and drive there! I can't see what is so hard about that.

I could never imagine trying to drive somewhere by blindly following "turn right here, left there" sheep instructions. To be following cheesy artificial intelligence would make me feel completely blind driving.

Turn off the Garmins and Tom Tom's people; those road-signs really do work if you look out the window and read them!

Ok. Rant off.

Correct, that is the best way to go but if I am heading into Boston etc it's not always easy to be reading a map/driving at the same time.

Yes, but don't you like to know where you are? Following turn by turn has never helped me actually have a good awareness of where I am, whereas always having that top-down view has helped me to get somewhere AND get my bearings for when I need to move around.

I'm guessing you haven't driven in the Greater Boston MA area lately; "those road signs" are sometimes scarcer than hen's teeth and can be far more confusing than watching the arrow. Given the number of one-way streets and "No Turn" signs, it isn't as easy as it might seem. Remember the phrase "Can't get there from here"?

When I was writing that post, I actually had something written about "unless you live in a place like Boston", but deleted it. Now I haven't been there in 25 years, but I remember how just getting one block over might mean zig-zagging all over the place.

For people who travel a lot for work (sales reps, etc.) I can see how valuable these things are. I just find the nav systems amusing because I know A LOT of people who buy these (because I guess they are a current "toy), and the people hardly ever travel! And when they do, they always go to the same place.

I have xroadgps' g-map US West... it's great for when I don't have wi-fi to use the Maps app as i dont have data. I'm waiting for the tom-tom gps app to come out...

The only gripes I have about g-maps is that it doesn't have voice guidance and it kicks off w/o restarting my route when I receive a call, make a call, or practically when I exit it or when it has to close...

But no, I would never pay 9.99$ for this thing, esp. if it requires data...
Might as well buy a cheap tom tom one or something for less than 120$...

Another option (for Blackberry at least) is the Garmin application. One time fee of $99, always up to date. However, like the $9 per month services offered by the various carriers, it relies on a good cellular connection. The maps are not stored on the device. Hit the boonies (or areas in Atlanta this week) and you are SOL.

I've got it on my work blackberry bold, and it is sweet! Love the fact that I can hit speaker while wearing my bluetooth and it talks via my blue tooth, and it works just as good as my old garmin.

Personally I wouldn't pay for it, but it sure is nice using for work, I frequently drive to different addresses all over the metro, and do have a need for it.

I would like to see how it well it works on my iphone, but am not willing to pay for it. I have no need personally, just work wise. They should offer a free month in my opinion.

If these players want to keep the subscription model and maximize revenue, the 'sweet spot' will likely be around $1.99~3.99mo. At $10 a month these providers be chasing an extremely small segment of the iPhone market, with no doubt plenty of one-off subscribers signing up only to cover an annual vacation.

And if the cost per subscriber basis really necessitates $10/mo, GPS providers should really reconsider offering a service like this. Seriously.

It's not "free", it's just included in the $99 Everything plan. If you decide for whatever reason not to take the $99 Everything plan, then it costs $9.99/mo, like all the other competitive navigation services.

Welcome to 2005, guys. I had VZNavigator way back then - and it worked great. Glad to see AT&T's on top of the game. (snicker)

These days, I have Onstar in my wife's car, and my antique Magellan in mine ... both work fine.

And, of course, we both have Google Maps on our BlackBerries. No excuse for getting lost now.
