He just did not want to be petted in that spot/way/at that time. I need to also mentioned that he's spoiled and an idiot. Now, I have to go clean my cat's house that I'm living in. | Cats can get like that if they have pent-up energy. I used to play with my cat doing that. I'd put a glove on, put it up like a puppet in front of her and start making a growling noise. She knew her cue and she defended herself against the puppet that kept trying to touch her. -- "While you can teach an old dog new tricks, you simply can't teach him to be a cat."

| From the little I know about cats from various cats my grandparents had, they tend to be independent and do what they want to do, not necessarily what you want them to do.
For example if you pick it up and put it in your lap it might immediately jump down. But in a little while when the cat feels like it, it will jump up on your lap and lie down. They just want you to know who's boss.

I don't know if it was a stray.. but it was friendly I picked her up and sat her in my lap she enjoyed in.. she only jumped down when she saw something in the bushes moved and gave a little meow when she jumped. She only nipped me once she was laying in the sun near the house she broke my skin and I said Ouch loud enough.. she never did it again..
I haven't seen her in two years.. I hope the owner took control of her or they did not put her to sleep..
I still have pictures of her on photobucket she jumped in my car and walked around inside then came out and got on my hood and walked around. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

| I once sat in a friends living room for a couple hours, with their cat jumping to grab my hand with his teeth, when i held my arm over the edge of the couch - about a foot or so for him to jump.
He was pretty intense. He would crouch on the floor just like a miniature tiger, and the second I'd stick my hand into his space, he'd leap. He wasn't hard to avoid, but it was pretty weird.
I wasn't feeling any pain - various beverages plus some tasty herbs. I think he was confusing the herbs with catnip. -- Cheers, Chuck MS-MVP 2005-2009 [Windows - Desktop Experience] Nitecruzr Dot Net

| Hold your hand below the cat's head so he can smell it and check you out. After he's done, then move on to gently scratching his chin, neck, forehead, and behind his ears.
If you move your hand in from above his head, he'll be cautious and may think it's some sort of attack. -- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

1 edit | Re: question on cat behavior Could be that the cat is just isn't accustomed to you yet, you moved too fast or the cat is actually slightly blind. Some are just plain skittish due to their environment. You could try using the skinner method and train it if you're going to be around awhile longer. I've done it with both of my cats, one responds to snapping, the other to nail snicking to call them.
But getting them used to you, by equating you as 'someone who gives it something' is the key part. Whether that's pleasure, food, or enjoyment is the easy part. Catnip, ryegrass, or catgrass are good choices. Also going on with normal daily stuff, and letting the cat see that you're a part of the house will let it get used to you.
Just wanted to add in here, I skipped to obvious stuff here about cats wanting to play(swatting, nipping bitting, etc) my old cat the male doesn't have any sense beyond, ZOMG ATTACK...and goes nuts when he can. I need to use a winter glove or lose a hand. The small cat, different story, she has no interest at all, it's all lazer pointer for her.

| I've got a male tabby that loves to do that. He likes for me to smack him (just playful smack) but eventually he gets so into swatting at me he gets into full on attack mode and the claws and teeth come out. He is playing when he does that, he just gets carried away. | |

| Here's the thing, cats really don't have much of a bite. Their jaws just don't have the overall strength that dogs or even humans possess. Their strength is in their claws. If he wanted to hurt you or ward you off, he would have scratched you.
Cats use their teeth just like you would use your hands to hold something firm. like if I would grab your arm and hold onto you.
I have a massive Mainecoon Cat that bites occasionally, either to solicit play, or just plain "love bites", or to say; "Hands off I'm napping and don't want to be disturbed", or; "Don't touch me there". This cat has never used his open claws when pawing either, even in play.
Cats pick individuals in a house to make friends with. Sounds like your Aunts cat has chosen you as a friend. -- 0111000001100101011000010110001101100101

| Yep, like others said here, it was playing with you. My cat will play rough. She'll use her claws, bite a little. But she knows not to go too far.
Get a laser pointer, and point it on the floor. That cat will go nuts trying to catch it. Like humans, just don't point it in their eyes. -- Photoshop these nuts in your mouth.
