Re: Wireless connection dead need help

If your getting a 192.168.1.X address then your definitely connecting to the router Ok. If you go into the router do you happen to have MAC address filtering enabled? If so disable it or add the MAC address of your client to the allowed list.

I would not use the wireless hardware utility manager but use Windows to manage the card instead. If you open the wireless hardware manager there should be a setting to disable it and/or allow Windows control.

You should use WPA2-Personal (aka WPA2-PSK [AES]) if the router AND all of your clients support that. Otherwise WPA-Personal (aka WPA-PSK [TKIP]) is good. In both cases use a long random ASCII key. I use a 63-character random ASCII key and WPA2-Personal.

MAC address filtering is not enabled. I've tried the built in Windows utility to manage the wireless connection but when I try that it never picks up any wireless networks and informs me to use the utility that came with my wireless card instead.

I just got home and I'm gonna go work on this again right now. Will inform you of the results. Thx for all the help so far.

Well it's working. I'm at a loss as to what exactly fixed it. I didn't do anything today that I didn't already try yesterday except change from WPA to WPA2 encryption.

On one more side note since I'm speaking to somebody so well informed can you explain what SSID broadcasting is? From what I understand this being enabled is what allows the network to show in the list when someone scans the area for wireless networks. I've looked into it and everywhere I've looked says to disable SSID broadcasting to have a more secure wireless network but every time I disable it it kills my wireless connection. So I'm forced to leave it enabled. Is this correct or am I misinformed yet again?

Thank you for your time, patience and information thus far!

There's a bit of jargon in there, so if you need clarification feel free to ask.

To add to the comments by No_Strings as long as you use strong encryption and a long random key your safe. Hiding the SSID, as noted in the FAQ, is just smoke and mirrors and quite simply can cause connectivity issues like you had. Hre is another reference for your reading pleasure.
