Firefox 3.5 Final Released

Firefox 3.5 is now available directly from Mozilla.

Information about two new features:

Location-Aware Browsing:
Websites that use location-aware browsing will ask where you are in order to bring you more relevant information, or to save you time while searching. Let’s say you’re looking for a pizza restaurant in your area. A website will be able to ask you to share your location so that simply searching for “pizza” will bring you the answers you need... no further information or extra typing required.

Or, if you’re mapping out directions to get somewhere, the website will know where you’re starting from so all you have to do is tell it where you want to go.

This service is totally optional – Firefox doesn’t share your location without your permission – and is done with the utmost respect for your privacy.
If you wish to disable the feature completely, please follow this set of steps:
- In the URL bar, type about:config
- Type geo.enabled
- Double click on the geo.enabled preference [this sets 'geo.enabled' to 'false']
- Location-Aware Browsing is now disabled
Controlling DNS prefetching:
Firefox 3.5 performs DNS prefetching. This is a feature by which Firefox proactively performs domain name resolution on both links that the user may choose to follow as well as URLs for items referenced by the document, including images, CSS, JavaScript, and so forth.

This prefetching is performed in the background, so that the DNS is likely to already have been resolved by the time the referenced items are actually needed. This reduces latency when, for example, the user actually clicks a link.

However, the user may wish to disable prefetching. This can be done by setting the 'network.dns.disablePrefetch' preference to 'true'.

Also, by default, prefetching of embedded link hostnames is not performed on documents loaded over HTTPS. This can be changed by setting the network.dns.disablePrefetchFromHTTPS preference to false.
Prefetching is already a feature in the Firefox 3.0.x series:
Helpful Tip: Disable Firefox Prefetching (different from above):
Something you may not realize is that Firefox has a setting that will prefetch websites and images to improve the user’s browsing experience, and it’s actually enabled by default. It will utilize your browser’s idle time to prefetch images and websites as determined by the webmasters.

If you don’t want Firefox to do this then you’ll have to manually go and disable it:
- In the Firefox Address Bar type about:config and press Enter.
- Find the option that is named network.prefetch-next and double-click on it.
- Change the value to false.

When you install it, it tells you how many of your addons it's disabling due to not being compatible. You can say OK, uninstall it, install 3.0, and everything will be back to normal.

If you check for updates from within Firefox, there will be a pop up window with a button to list which of your installed add-ons are incompatible.

Hi gollumbird,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

The Norton Toolbar that comes with Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton 360 version 3 is currently incompatible with Firefox 3.5. However, Symantec is currently working on a hotfix to resolve this issue which will be released on July 15th.

Please visit the links below for further information.

Compatibility of Norton 360 with Firefox 3.5

Just a point of curiosity:

If that's not enabled by default, shouldn't the setting then already be "false" by default? (I haven't installed 3.5 yet so can't look myself.)

By default this is disabled - network.dns.disablePrefetchFromHTTPS - so by default it is set to true (this is the most secure option).

Yep. "Do don't do that" = true. A bad reading on my part.

Re: Firefox add-ons: Which work in 3.5?

The only add-on that I've found that doesn't work is Stealther 1.0.6. Firebug had to be upgraded to 1.4.0b3 to be compatible. I'm using too many add-ons that work to list them all here.

The geo-location thing is...interesting.

I tried the Flickr test, agreed to share my location and then it told me I was in Chicago.

Maybe a few bugs left to fix with that

For those of you who rely on Tab Mix Plus as I do: The latest dev build works with FF3.5, and seems to work well based on my limited testing. You can get it from:

I have few add-ons so that was not a problem. But it seems as if whenever FF has a major update like this it "breaks" my setting of Pegasus as default mailer and I always have a hard time finding the right settings again.

It only gets to within a 15-mile radius for me. That actually makes me feel good. They don't really know exactly where I am. They'll have to launch a Predator to find me. OTOH, they could just look me up in the phone book.

Go here: »www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/geolocation/
then click on the blue link that says, "Give it a try!".

There's another one, on Flickr I think, but I can't remember the address right now. I'll get back to you if I find it again.

Re: Firefox 3.5 Final Released

It's a marketing tool for sponsors, so it has a place in a browser if one purpose of the browser is to sell things to users. If you don't want to be bothered by it, disabling it is a good idea. This idea of targeted marketing via software goes all the way back to the original Prodigy. People didn't like it then, either. Oh, and I also just disabled the geolocator in Firefox.

I’ve been running RC3 at work for about a week, it was fast and like it allot. Anyway just seen your post on the final and installed with the FF updater. I lost some themes which is no problem but lost one extension that may be a concern, is there any replacement for MediaPlayerConnectivity, do I even need it anymore? my other 9 extensions are working fine.... other than that did the geo tool tweak and all it good here, again it very fast. Thanks for the tweaking info

Hmmm.

I've never experienced that behavior, so I guess Mozilla must've given me a special update four or five years ago.

Is this the same fix that disables awful bar but also provides you no history in the address bar drop down (like available in FF2 and any version of IE?). My experience has been that when trying to disable awful bar you loose the ability to use your history or autocomplete in the address bar. not really a great "work around".

Re: Firefox 3.5 Final Released

Well it does get rid of the drop down. I thought that's what annoyed you? What's the difference between the drop down in IE/FF2 and the FF3? They're both annoying to have. Seems like IE/FF2 predicts based on history whereas FF3 predicts based on history and bookmarks. I rather it do neither so that's why I disable it.

This add-on replaces the awesomebar and makes it so that it only displays your history (not your bookmarks). »https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7429

Re: Firefox 3.5 Final Released

There are a few things it does differently that are annoying. One as you mentioned is basing the drop down on your bookmarks. The other, and it's been a while since I've used awful bar so I may be wrong, it also doesn't clear out your history (bookmarks or history) when you clear your cache. Maybe this was always just bookmarks? I have so many bookmarks it's hard to tell.

Like severach See Profile I was hoping that there would be an option to disable awful bar built-in to FF. I'm surprised as there are enough people that dislike it that you'd think it would warrant an option to do so. It could even come enabled by default so that whatever team at Mozilla developed it didn't let their baby to be forgotten.

Anyway.. thanks. I'll wait and see when I get FF3.5 what options are available then.

EDIT: from the link you provided above

quote:

That is for the 3.011 or whatever the last 3.0 release was.
Does it still work on 3.5? I don't keep history or cookies disabling the awful bar is ok by me. I'd probably disable that geocaching, too.
Now what did 3.5 do about windows security? I couldn't get one of the older versions to download anything as I have IE locked down so tight it can barely run. Mozilla finally published a workaround for that and hinted that 3.1 (now3.5) would have an option to not tie into windows security.
Trying to find workarounds for some problems is impossible.
