Anyways if i was you i would call Cox CS back and ask them whats needs to be done, and what modem you will be getting. Because without a newer supported modem, you could lose your internet connection because of the modem no longer being supported.

Also, to be able to offer additional services like DOCSIS 3.0 some modems must be taken off the network.

2 edits | I got my new Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 modem this morning and installed it. Without any tweaking, a speedtest on Speakeasy Dallas shows me at 23,008 kbps down and 2,843 up. I am very pleased with my Cox High Speed Internet, and have been for over 10 years now.

I just pulled a 23085 kbps download from speakeasy Dallas. This is a DOCSIS 1.0 unsupported modem, so I can understand Cox wanting me to upgrade it. What I don't understand is why I'm required to turn in my SB modem that I paid around $100 dollars for and own, Cox support couldn't answer that!
I'm guessing theavenger1 your running Cox Preferred, are you doing any tcp tweaking? | |

You are not required to return a modem. Some people want Cox to recycle the modem, but you can certainly keep the old modem if you would like. | |

| I have my new Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 modem hooked up and with a little tcp tweaking, I just pulled a 32,630 kbps down and 4,838 up from Speakeasy Dallas, not bad speed for Cox preferred. As for my old SB modem, customer service said I could keep it but since the s/n and mac address have already been used it is worthless. With the new speeds I'm pulling down it's just a paper weight anyway so I think I'll send it in for recycling. I'm very happy with Cox High Speed Internet, that's why when A.T.&T. calls I just laugh! | |

| If you opt to pick up your new modem at one of the Cox stores, then the $10 fee is waived- the $10 covers shipping, etc.
If you own/bought your own modem, Moto 4100, for instance, then you can keep it.
The DPC2100's (like mine) are very fast and reliable. | |

no cox is not going D3 accross the board, but upgrading to atleast D2 the free modems are D2 not D3. If they are offering a free modem take it. did the notice say when your dlink will no longer be on the network? Omaha had about a 3-4 week gap where the dlink was on the account and the replacement cox sent was supposed to be on the account. I see you have the lowest tier that's the reason you have pay a fee for the modem. | |

I see you have the lowest tier that's the reason you have pay a fee for the modem. I have to disagree since I'm using Cox Preferred!

| If you are in Omaha and you got a letter saying you need a new modem, get it. They are moving, eventually, to DOCSIS 3.0. Because of the hardware limitations (of your modem) they make you upgrade, otherwise you will wake up one day offline. Some modems won't do 3.0, which means you may not get a 3.0 modem, but you will still work with where they are going to move their bandwidth that your new 2.x modem will communicate on.
Cox isn't out to get you, they just want to make sure your equipment will work on their network, thus if you own your equipment they tell you they will give you a discount to get new equipment. Eventually when they roll out 3.x modems, everyone new gets one out of the box. However, just like cars, if you want the newest you have to buy it. So, if you are a stragler, not with a legacy modem, look for this to be you in the future.
If you had a dlink modem, I'm sure Cox NEVER sold it to you. Considering they have either Moto or SA plant, they would probably stick with those companies for modems or possibly a Toshiba and maybe something else in there sporadically.
Currently, there is nothing 3.0 going on currently in Omaha's production environment. I know I had a sign on my door a year or so ago saying they were "Doing network upgrades". I'm sure that is what they had to do for #1 to support 3.0.
I would guess that your Cox ISP will be 3.0 in the future and if you pay for the right level of service you will see the benefits that 3.0 not only brings the service provider, but also everyone else. | |

EON is part of the D3 upgrade and I was told by a cox csr via email EON is done for the whole Omaha area.
