Anyone remember a RSSI booster thread?

My WISP/DSLR search techniques are usually quite good, but my brain must have gone rusty.

FYI went "cold turkey" from my favourite forum to finish up a long overdue hardware design and apparently missed a very interesting discussion.

I think it was the wifi-extender thread? May have been "wifi-xtender" or something like that. Posted by DSLbyAir I believe. I ordered one but have yet to test it out.

WIFI-X-TENDER is not a magical mystery product ...
Convenient disclaimer.

said by Dubious_Website :

Simply put, the WIFI-X-TENDER helps to concentrate and focus the wireless signalto your wireless antenna that is built into your laptop or cell phone, or any other wireless device.
But notice how they are describing their non-magical simple product ... gullible customers could actually believe weak RF signal will be "amplified" when it passes through this tape ... but of course they will insist they never made such false claims.

When antenna gain increases in one particular direction by attaching a passive reflector (or lense), it follows that the gain has also decreased in many other directions.

Customers could finalize tape location after some experiements i one room and be disappointed when they move to another room ... or the neighbourhood Starbucks. The company could refuse to refund
by arguing tape was applied to "sub-optimal" location.

Anyway where would you stick this tape on a typical all-in-one WISP CPE? Obstructing the patch antenna or behind the ground plane?

We really should not encourage anyone to buy into this scam. There are much better ways to spend $20 during the summer.

Hmm...

Super said he had it "in the mail" I thought but never posted his results... maybe it actually worked and he was too worried of getting blasted for supporting it? LOL J/K

What better way to not encourage anyone to buy a widget than to start new threads about old dead threads about said widget!

Well.......... I did get them in the mail. While I really did not have time to spend on exhausting tests, I did try them on my phone and netbook. With the phone, I can honestly say that sometimes, it did increase my signal quality, but it also seemed that I had to stay in one spot, occasionally spinning in a 360 degree circle until it did anything?, almost like I had to be in the correct location so the reflective properties of the tape itself could catch and focus the signal?

There is a section of highway that I travel everyday to get from my home to the city. This section of road has always been a dead zone for me (I have AT&T), and when I say dead, I mean it. it is 3.4 miles of nothing from Lebanon city to my home. I get service again at my house, but it is also 640ft above sea level. The road itself is in a depression the entire length.

After adding the tape to the back (I covered the entire phone,as here again, I have no idea where the antenna is?), I actually had signal again in 3 places along the route. it was only 1 bar at 2 of them and 2 bars at another, but here again, it was signal.

With the Netbook, I am not sure where the antenna is actually located on the computer, so I am still not sure where I should be sticking the stuff? By just holding the black sheet alongside the computer at different locations I thought the antenna may be located, I again had mixed results, all of them dependent on the position of both the computer and the black sheet of material. When I got to a spot where it seemed to make a difference, I confirmed it was in fact the back sheet making the difference in signal and NOT the location of the computer by removing and then putting back the black sheet.

Since the stuff didn't come with instructions, perhaps I am doing something incorrectly?. I guess all in all, considering the very low price point, it wouldn't hurt to carry this around "Just in case" you are in a situation where 1 or 2 dB would make the difference between using or not using your phone/computer. All in all though, it does appear that this product won't be the next "Killer app." to make a huge difference in the wireless world, but it may help in some situations?.

Most of the laptops iv'e taken apart have two antennas. One at each corner at the bottom of the screen. Not sure why they don't place them at the top of the screen.

Even if they paid you, there is no way you could write more than what they are suggesting at their website: try out every possible location and stick it where customer feel/think/imagine they are getting better reception.

For some gullible people, their own bottom (rather than laptop's bottom as they suggest) could prove to be the best location.

I am confident that you (and Joe) will eventually retract recommendations for such scams ... after some common sense reasoning with your momentarily f@rting brains.

These are not exactly a product you could "carry" around waiting for those occasions. FYI warranty becomes void as soon as you peel the adhesive, and/or after some period, and they obviously have to sell separate "models" for laptop and phone.

I offer some common sense advice to people who love "extra" gain. USB dongles work for any laptops if the built-in WiFi is disabled and some cell phones have auto-switching external antenna connector. But most of us will be happy to just move around the laptop or phone for better reception.

That's because the bezels around the LCD screen are getting narrower so there is not much room to route traditional RF pigtails anymore.

However some high end laptops use shielded tracks on the LED backlight matrix board to carry RF signal to embedded "chip" antennas. Apple, some HP and Toshiba models, etc.

Lutful, I am simply telling you what happened when I tried to use the product. It is what it is. Telling me that I am confused about what I found when using it is simply crazy. I will NEVER attempt to sell this product, nor will you see my face on any of their advertisements any time soon. The man sent me some of it in the mail and asked for my opinion so I gave it here.

While I like Joe a lot, I wouldn't risk my reputation on a piece of plastic that may or may not work?. I opened the package, gave it a whirl and went from there. I also feel that it would be hard for a piece of plastic to change RF principles? I simply took what was sent to me and gave it a try. I think I made it more than clear that I may have been confused about my results. Irregardless of what you feel about the information I typed on this page, I really don't care if you think this is right or wrong at this point?.

In the past, I have always respected any information you have posted here. Even IF I thought you were smoking crack, I never once told you that any of your body parts should be involved in any type of transaction?.

Today however, I honestly feel you should take certain body parts and use it to reproduce yourself. The next time you disagree with my opinion, I have no problem with that fact, just make sure you do it in a professional way.

Lutful,
Are you drunk??? While alot of your posts can be taken with a grain of salt, over the years I've notice yourself getting more and more confrontational.

Cloning me would be really bad for the forum ... but I think you meant I should go "amuse" myself.

I did not actually dispute your personal observation but I am sorry that you were offended by what I thought was a generic funny comment.

FYI millions of people are buying similar products and are happy with them. Just read some of the responses to this mythbuster: »www.andybrain.com/extras/cellpho···test.htm.

Finally let me try the joke again - even my son thinks it is funny.
