It's actually quite shocking how little they do know, the only questions I ask an employee of big box stores relates to what they have in stock. Asking them any specific questions regarding a product is a waste of time in most cases. |

1 edit | reply to ztmike Yeah like that commercial that is airing now where the BB readheaded girl is talking about the guy who calls about LCD TVs and is asking about 10k vs 15k contrast ratios.....then she says 'wow, those are really specific questions, I asked him where he was calling from....Walmart'....
I laughed since the commercial just assumes consumers are idiots & don't know the basics about TVs. - i.e. Obviously the guy could not have just been at home calling about the BB TVs in stock & using his own knowledge, he had to be standing in another store staring at the specs
Oh and when she says at the end - "I think he'll be a BestBuyer for life" -- I was kinda speechless.
Next commercial will be a continuation....
"Then he asked me this crazy question about response time, measured in ms.....well I immediately went to get my manager, and we got to the bottom of that, with a BB smile I might add. " |

| reply to ztmike said by ztmike : I called and asked a sales person if I could talk to H.R or someone and she said their not in today and took my name and number and said he will call me tomorrow. I don't know about BestBuy but most big box store managers have very little discretion. Everything is handled out of corporate offices. Very different then walking into a mom & pop store and talking to the owner.

| reply to ztmike I have run into similar lines from employees. I was not happy with the service I received in a store recently, and went to the front and asked for a manager. I was told there are no managers on duty right now.
I applied there a few years ago, and submitted the app on site. I called to follow up a few days later, and was told two different answers... one was there are no HR people in the store, and a few hours later, I was told that the HR people were on lunch.

said by ztmike :What do you all do for this job? Do I have to take sales also? What are breaks like? Pay ranges? Do you get a set work schedule? I worked for BB for 10 years (during the 90's), and, while not for Geek Squad, (I was pre-Geek Squad), I worked mostly at the Chicago Service Center (now closed up and moved to Kentucky).
To answer some of your questions from my experience -
What do you do? --> Mostly it is just replace the defective part, or, in the case of software issues, Backup/wipe/reload is the common answer. (Sometimes w/o the backup part).
Do I take sales? --> YES! Absolutely! You will be selling extended warranties, parts, software, other services, whether really needed or not. BB thrives on sales and you are just another cog in the machine.
Pay range --> As I understand it, it is about $8.00 to $12.00 / hr, however I cannot be absolutely sure about this and it varies by location and demand. May be a bit higher in some areas and may be different for on-site workers.
Breaks -> Varies depending on state law, but for the most part it consists of 2 fifteen minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch for full time people.
Set work schedule --> No. It most likely will be different every week.
edit --> additional info -->
Unless recently changed, the only way BB hires is through the on-line system. If it says no openings, then there are none. You would also be asked to take a profile test (On-line), WHICH YOU MUST PASS in order to be considered for employment. No one can override this. As I understand it, if you have done sales before, you will NOT pass this test (it is set up this way). BB wants only people they can easily train to do things their way without a hassle.

I'll be surprised if I get a phone call from them. All I wanted to know was if they were hiring for any in-store geek squad members and if I could come in and apply, since their website is not showing ANY job openings in ANY BB stores to at least Indy, IN Which I find hard to believe. |

2 edits | Just wondering about applying for a Geek Squad in-store position, I can't find jack shit for what I did for factory work within some what close proximity to where I live..so I figured I would check into what I do 2nd best..computers.
I looked at BB's site for a geek squad position, they want you to have experience in Apple OS (I don't have experience on that OS) But they say they'll train you? I imagine just the basic ways around the OS?
What do you all do for this job? Do I have to take sales also? What are breaks like? Pay ranges? Do you get a set work schedule?
Not something I really want to do..I always take the people at BB for snobs that they think they know everything, but I'm getting a little desperate for some income.
I noticed NONE of the local BB stores are hiring from their website, but maybe its not posted? I find that a little odd none in my area are hiring ..
(Wasn't sure where to post this) |
