| [iPhone] Kinda late, but oh well
A new in-house repeater system deployment (at my employer) has killed the Sprint signal inside the building. So, after two weeks of getting fed up with no reception, and a battery dying by the end of the day on my Blackberry Curve, I ETF'd the Sprint account, and got a 3GS 32GB.
I got it on opening day, but haven't had a chance to post about it here yet.
I'm still trying to get down the black art of getting the battery to last a while (I'm getting better). All in all, I have 46 apps on it now, and have been trying a different set of case combos and whatever to get it to be to my liking. It got a good workout at the Taste of Chicago yesterday, and the past two days that the wife and I were on vacation there. (I love the GPS and Google Maps Metro instructions!)
There's a few pet peeves that I have about it, but hopefully someone will fix them eventually.
1) No background apps. Why oh why can't I let Pandora continue to stream in the background? 2) Differences between the other platform apps - i.e. FaceBook will sync your address book on the BlackBerry to your friends list, update the pictures in the phone book, etc. Also, FaceBook on Blackberry will let you pick the album where the mobile uploads go. The iPhone ones go directly into "Mobile Uploads." 3) I'd love to set the new mail, SMS, etc, sounds like you can with the ringtone. (That was the shortest crash course in GarageBand I've ever taken.) 4) Even with my Air Jacket on, Apple didn't leave enough leeway on the iPhone dock to put the airjacket'ed unit on the dock. So, I have one of those A1153 universal docks (I'm guessing the generation prior to the one that's out right now) and I put a larger dock adapter in it (for my 5.5G iPod) and I can dock the iPhone in it. Of course, the iPhone nicely prompts me that the A1153 wasn't made for that model iPhone, and asks me if I want to put on Airplane Mode. But it does charge it. (Maybe the folks that make the Air Jacket can make their own dock insert mold?) 5) No way to Bluetooth files on and off of the device? Does this thing just support audio Bluetooth? --

| reply to acadiel One more thing to add...
AT&T couldn't put my Illinois number on a Louisiana family plan without converting the Louisiana plan to a 'business' plan. The only bad thing with a business plan is that you can't view the bill online - you can do everything else, but you have to wait to get the bill in the mail. --

2 edits | reply to acadiel Yeah, multitasking is already built into the 3.0 OS, it's just that Apple won't open it up to users and the third-party apps. However, the iPhone Dev Team will release the Jailbreak for the 3.0 OS shortly, so you can then just jailbreak your iPhone and install Backgrounder on it, which should solve multitasking.
Also, about battery life, just charge it normally and it should get better within a few cycles.
Congrats on your new toy....

| reply to acadiel Of course, the iPhone nicely prompts me that the A1153 wasn't made for that model iPhone, and asks me if I want to put on Airplane Mode. But it does charge it. Just ignore it. That prompt will go away after a few seconds on it own. There's a different prompt for incompatible chargers that you will likely see at some point.
There's a few apps like Air Sharing that allow you to use wifi to share files. No OBEX support that I'm aware of.
As for your other complaints, jailbreaking is probably going to be your friend once the GS version has been released. That would allow you to customize your notification sounds and multitask.
I'm not sure why you can't customize the notification sounds. That omission is annoying because there's several iPhones in this house. The best is when I've installed something on my Mac - it makes that same "Tri tone" noise as the notification, and that causes us to look around wondering who got the text. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Unfortunately it's $2.99 now (it was free when I installed it). It will add your Facebook friends pictures, birthdays, and location to your iPhone contacts. It has worked flawlessly for me so far.
There is another one I found called feX for Facebook that's $1.99 but I haven't tried it yet. Seems nice from the description because it can bring contacts over from Facebook that aren't currently on the iPhone, which MyPhone+ doesn't do..

If you ever wondered why it does airplane mode, it's for speaker docks that aren't shielded against cellphone interference. -- VGMasters my video game forum |

| reply to acadiel If you are looking for a free ringtone maker get Itoner. Sure it will keep prompting you to buy the software after trial date runs out but that is only 5 seconds. Then all you do is drag the mp3's to the iphone on your mac screen hit the button and it will load it on to your phone. No muss no fuss and easy as 1, 2,3 truthfully. Been using it since the early days and they continue to update the software so you can do it with 3.0.
If you need to cut down ringtones you will need another program for that but if you just want mp3s put on your phone, which will show up in the sounds section, use Itoner it's really simple and free or pay $15 for the full version. »www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/itoner/ -- Need some IT work?
