New HD Channels?

Has anyone heard if there will be anymore HD channels added this summer? MSNBC and BBC will be availablle as well as TCM. Is there a chance we may get any of these? I'm also hoping that CBS College Sports and NBA will be added soon.

The only 1 I know of is NBA TV HD - which is to be on by the time next season begins.

CBS CS stated in their PR that VZ would carry the HD feed "sometime in 2009" - but I have not heard any whispers on that, nor on any of the other channels you listed.

At this point I'm only waiting for the Cartoon Network. Verizon has provided everything but the NFL Ticket at this point. I would like to see the NBA and NHL packages in HD though.

NFL Ticket is exclusive to DirecTV, the contract was just renewed.
NBA / NHL in HD to me would be a waste of bandwidth unless they could do these IP based. But, considering InDemand does not carry all the games in HD anyway it is a moot point.

It's only a waste of bandwidth since you don't want them. I'm sure 90% of the other people here would rather see those channels in HD then the .tv channels, Tennis HD, Mav Tv or YES.

No, it is a waste of bandwidth to carry them in HD because they are part time stations that would require several QAMs.

And -- I completely agree with the stations you listed, I could care less about them as well, but at least they are full time stations (with the exception of YES, which I don't count since the point of the station is Yankees games which can't air outside of NY).

Re: New HD Channels?

They aren't exactly full time stations when they rerun the same programming. The demand on the part time programming is higher then these.

Again, it's a moot point because InDemand doesn't even offer them as HD feeds.

BTW, I would be the first to subscribe if Extra Innings was in all HD, but I still think it would be a waste of QAM space

It's not entirely moot when Verizon can make their own deal like DTV.

Re: New HD Channels?

InDemand has two HD services. Game HD (VZ VC#1474) is used for MLB/NHL coverage and Team HD is used for NBA/MLS coverage (will be on VZ VC#1489 for start of NBA season)...

Tennis Channel HD is probably the channel I watch the most. I could care less about the NBA Channel. The same basically goes for the NFL Network.

NBA LP (ten SD services) along with the one corresponding HD service will be in place in time for next season...In fact, Team 6-10 are currently in use for MLS coverage...

Maybe Verizon will surprise us and add MSNBC HD when it officially launches tomorrow. But that is not likely. Of course, with the excessive coverage about you know who on the news channels, that may be a good thing.

MSNBC HD goes live on CableVision today. Time Warner in July. By the end of August, MSNBC HD will be available in 11 million homes. No mention of FIOS yet. Also BET HD went live on DirecTV

MSNBC HD & NBATV

TWC in selected markets of course, which rarely seems to include North Texas. Their unique offering here is CBS College Sports HD but you only get that with their $7+ sports tier.

NBA TV is my #1 FiOS request now, SD & HD. Wasn't it actually in the channel lineup about 7 months ago for a couple of months... When does NBA League Pass get taken out of the hands of iN Demand?

Probably never. DTV and Dish negotiate directly with the leagues because of their national footprint. It would be a logistical nightmare for cable companies (and I include FiOS in this) to handle it all.

Even though I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, because Fios is after all the leader in total number of HD channels available, they are missing quite a few HD channels. The total number of available HD channels not carried by Fios, by my estimation, is 24 channels. Here is the list:
Viacom
1 BET HD
2 BET J HD
3 LOGO HD
Rainbow Media
4 AMC HD
5 IFC HD
6 WE TV HD
7 Fuse HD
Turner
8 Cartoon Network HD
9 TCM HD
10 Tru TV HD
Fox
11 Fuel HD
Independent
12 Jewelry TV HD
13 Fashion TV HD
14 TV One HD
Comcast
15 E! Entertainment HD
16 G4 HD
17 Style HD
NBC Universal
18 MSNBC HD
Coming Soon to Fios
19 Crime & Investigation HD
20 CBS College Sports HD
21 NBA TV HD
22 Team HD (HD channel for NBA League Pass)
23 RFD TV HD
24 TBN HD
I wouldn't mind having the Turner & Comcast HD Channels.

Yes NBA TV does carry a lot of live games. They have a lot of games throughout the week. On Tuesdays, its fan night, where the fans get to pick which game they want to see. Also, a lot of the first round NBA playoff games were only on NBA TV. Plus its cool to have detailed highlights of all the NBA games at night (kind of like sportscenter but with just NBA highlights).

There aren't any among those that I miss having in HD. Once everything is broadcast in native HD it would be good I suppose, but most channels just stretch or warp SD to fill the screen and it looks awful. I'll watch the SD channels rather than stretched/warped SD on HD channels.

MSNBC, Turner Classic Movies, TruTV, BET, not to mention that region already has Fuse, G4, Cartoon Network, We, IFC in HD. Portland, though, for those who don't know, has been light years ahead of the rest of the country (except Boston) for Comcast.

Hopefully Verizon adds a half dozen more HD channels this fall. At some point though, the number of channels nor internet speed are not going to make a competitive difference, and the providers will have to sell based on other measures. Verizon said recently that they are no longer going to compete on price, well, umm, that might make its way back into the equation. And price wars, of course, are usually very ugly.

If I were Verizon, I would really be focusing on getting more of the Web into the TV/STB. That means web-video sites like You Tube, Hulu, Fancast and AOL, and not the worthless sites I've read they are going to offer. I want to see old episodes of Thundercats or Welcome Back Kotter, not videos of some idiot skateboarding off a trash dumpster.

What sickens me is that Cablevision is actually starting to carry some cool HD channels, like TCM HD, that I wish were available on FIOS. When I had CV, they were notoriously slow in adding any new channels, either in SD or HD. On those rare occasions when they did add new channels, along with the inevitable rate increase, they always acted like they were doing their customers the mother of all favors for doing so.

Now it's Cablevision that is adding HD channels left and right & it's Verizon that's seemingly dead in the water like some rat-gnawed corpse when it comes to adding new channels. Go figure.

Re: New HD Channels?

That's right, they added Recipe TV at some point, didn't they? How silly of me to overlook that monumental achievement in the history of HD TV.

The point I was trying to make is that if Cablevision (a company that until very recently has had a history of only adding new channels to their lineup slowly) can add new premium HD channels as they become available, Verizon should be able to as well.

EDIT:

Let me be perfectly clear here so there are no misunderstands. I'm bitter specifically about Cablevision carrying TCM HD, a channel I'd very much like to see in the FIOS HD lineup. I was a Cablevision customer for 20 years, and it was like trying to pull teeth from a crocodile in heat to get them to add new channels to their lineup, no matter how popular those channels were on other services. Now that they've got some competition, they're adding new channels like there's no tomorrow.

You can tell us that until you're blue in the face, but no one in the world considers the .TV channels real HD additions.

Verizon added six channels in the last two months, and destroyed the bandwidth for six other future channels.

At least 7 of these channels are pure fluff. The 6 .crap channels do not deserve to be on any line-up, and YES is merely a 24 hour informercial about the Yankees with about half of its programming in SD. Vz. needs to shine now that some of the better channels are becoming available in HD.

Anything shot on 35mm or 70mm film, which includes I think almost all films anyone would ever want to watch, contain a resolution higher than 1080p. So any of those could be converted to HD fairly easily. I have no idea, but my guess is that Turner's Classics have not been converted to HD from their original stock. TCM does show some newer films, but odds are they are still just SD copies.

The next ones Verizon should go after are BBC, MSNBC, Comcast's, TCM, and Cartoon Network. The Cablevision/Rainbow networks should be added, but we all know the story there.

What's very ironic is that Verizon's SD quality on a channel such as TCM is so good, that TCM HD (upconverted) looks about the same on an HDTV. Whereas someone like Comcast almost has to have TCM HD for HDTV's because their SD quality is so horrible. So in line with what VZ Mark is saying, Verizon doesn't really need to add the HD version, because the SD is just as good. But it makes Verizon look weaker because they don't have the HD version.

From what I've seen Nick HD doesn't really have many HD programs yet, perhaps they will start animating some of their cartoons in HD now that they have a HD channel. I guess they could try and get HD broadcasting rights on the shows they have on nick at night (if available). From what little I've seen there isn't a noticeable difference between regular Nick and NickHD.
