First are you talking about two separate DSL lines?

What level of tech support is blowing smoke/talking nonsense with the "exceeding our flow-cache" phrase? Did you buy "time sharing" DSL or "always on" DSL?

You are saying that purchasing a Static IP corrected your disconnections? If yes, then something else was fixed/changed during the change over as Dynamic IP DSL and Static IP DSL have no difference in their stability abilities. The DSL signal doesn't know or care if the IP is Dynamic or Static. In other words, that isn't a factor that affects stability of the DSL signal. It might affect the Routing to where you are going over a route that isn't oversold and only if the Dynamic IPs are ending up on a different Route that actually is oversold. That would cause disconnections though it would cause huge latency changes especially during peak use periods like the evenings and weekends.

You should always start with diagnosing the DSL Modems LEDs, then look at the SNR and Attenuation on the line. There should be a log in most DSL Modem//Router that allow you to see DSL events and PPP events so you can tell very quickly what the conditions are by deciphering the log entries.

It's the router that's usually behind the drop, and no, it's not necessarily true for all. I don't know the characteristics of the OP's setup, but it's just another item to tick off for troubleshooting, though.

Does your modem offer connection options? I have ADSL with "at&t Yahoo! HSI", and my Siemens SpeedStream 4100 offers three 'Connection Type' options:

• Smart keep alive
• Connect on demand
• Always attempt to connect

The first and second will both drop the connection if there is no traffic on the line for some unknown period of time. Even when browsing a web site, if you pause to read a lengthy section, and your browser isn't sending a "heartbeat", your modem will detect no activity and drop the connection.

I've found that the 'Always attempt to connect' option reliably keeps the connection up, no matter what I am doing.

Never made a difference with my connection. Like daveinpoway See Profile, I am with "at&t Yahoo! HSI".

Questions:
1) what OS is your boss using? (include version & service pack info as applicable)
2) when the connection drops, how long does it usually stay like that?
3) what are the lights on the DSL modem doing? (are all of them lit?)
4) what do the transceiver stats on the modem look like?
5) what do you see when you do an ipconfig /all (or ifconfig -a on Linux) when the connection drops? (what I am looking for here is what happens to the default gateway)

I had a problem with my DSL dropping frequently and regularly with an Actiontec Modem in a Residential setting.

I have Dos Batch files that I use to: Ping, Check IP addressing, etc. And when connection dropped I couldn't ping past the DSL Modem. Had to reboot all.

I found that somehow the DSL modem had the same IP address [192.168.x.x] as that of my Wireless AP and Router which was a Netgear.

Connection was - phone line to Modem and Modem to Netgear AP/Router.

And it seemed that the Actiontec was acting as a DHCP server.

Solution was to change the Netgear's [192.168.y.y] use of IP addresses to something other than what the Actiontec was using.

Was this my problem? Not sure but once I made changes - never had that problem again.

I'm currently trying to find a reasonable resolution to a network problem. This problem has plagued both my boss and myself. What will happen is that you can be browsing fine for a while and then the connection will just drop. What I've noticed is that when the connection drops I am unable to ping out. Speaking with the ISP helpdesk, I'm told you can't ping because that it is low priority traffic, but they can't answer why I can ping when the connection is restored. We are being told that loss of connection is caused by us exceeding our flow-cache and that purchasing a static IP address would fix this issue. I'm running through an actiontec 704wg modem/router combination. My boss is going through a zoom modem connected to a standard router. In my case, I've switched to static ip addressing and that has resolved my issues. As for my boss, he's connected his system directly to the modem, reset the winsock and ip via the netsh command. Even with the system being connected directly to the modem, he is being told that he has over 1000 connections open. He's gone through and used tcp/ip view and he doesn't see any stay connections on any ports. In the past I've been told that this has been caused by either downloading files or web browsing. My boss has said that he will normally see this problem later in the evening around 8pm or so. The isp we use is Souris River telephone, at srt.com. To what I understand is that use NAT for the DHCP server. If anyone has any information regarding any fixes or ideas what can be done to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
