Re: NotFixed:XP sees All DVD's as "CDROM" can't read them

Can't pull other drives, they are in laptops. Burned 6 or 7 DVD-R's on sunday. new drive had no issues reading them.

So I concur, bad RW laser.

Not sure if you're still looking for input or not -

RW drives use 2 lasers - one to read, one to write, so it's possible the read laser is failing, which is why the system can't read the discs, but the drive can still burn them.

Cheap enough to replace.

Have you tried one of the other system's DVD drives in your system, to eliminate the system as the problem? I'm sure it's the drive, but you never know.

Drive was purchased in 2006, 1st year it was released. Went to CompUSA (we still have them here in FL) and got a Sony DRU-V200A for $39.00. This is a Sony re-brand of the Optiarc -Ad7200A.

All problems appear to be fixed. Guess I finally "wore" out the old unit. I might getting the 3rd party firmware over at CDfreaks and apply it to the old 7170A and see if that fixes it.

Sounds like a firmware bug in the Optiarc drive itself. I would recommend contacting the manufacturer and discussing it with engineers.

And yes, it's very possible a drive can burn a DVD correctly but later detects the disc as a CD. I've seen this behaviour on certain brands of (very old) Toshiba laptops.

Get in contact with the drive manufacturer. If you can't, stop buying Optiarc. I think it's that simple.

XP sees All DVD's as "CDROM" can't read them

Had this Optiarc AD-7170A since 2006, burned 1,000's of DVD with it. All my DVD's are Taiyo Yuden Media (TY's).

This 7170A has the original firmware on it. Never been flashed.

Any DVD I put into it to read goes from DVD-RAM to "CD-ROM"

Just burned 4 DVD's yesterday, had no issues ejected the DVD's and filed them. Today, 7170A drive also gives me the "CD-ROM" nonsense these 4 DVD's also. The dvd's contain MP3's on them.

4 other PC's dvd drives in the house can read all 4 DVD's with no problems. It is as the 7170A is not sensing the DVD as a DVD and thinks it is a CD-ROM. I can pull 2 or 3 yr old DVD's that all PC's can read but the 7170A.

I have also deleted the "Lower Filters" reg entry. didn't fix it. I didn't have an upper filters

removed the drive from XP, didn't fix the problem.

XP still reads any DVD and drive goes from DVD-RAM to CDROM when reading any DVD. Double click on the drive give the message "Windows can not read from this disc. Disc may be corrupted....etc"

Again, 4 other dvd drives can read these DVD's.

I can't believe that this drive is dead. If that were the case, it wouldn't be able to burn DVD's correct?

don't remember the last time I needed to read an DVD, so I can't narrow down when this started.

XP Sp2 with all patches (No IE8), Nod32 V4 and Outpost Pro 2008 firewall installed on this PC.

Changing the letter worked for a shot time. But issue is back again. Google search brings up many people having this issue but nobody posts a true fix.
