Which battery type is really a personal preference. Some like AA's better, some like proprietary better. My daughter has 2131 shots on her K100D, and as far as I can recall, has recharged the Eneloops maybe 4 or 5 times. I think they've only completely run out 2 times. The vast majority were taken witout flash, probably 2000 or so.
My personal preference is the proprietary, but the AA's seem to work well enough here. |

said by Mike D :Howdy all, I am looking for some advice on a DSLR camera. I'm about to be a father and want to bump up my camera and photography skills as I will soon be taking a ton of pictures. Well assuming you have no lens investment from film era you seem not to.... money but will NOT leave you wishing for more. OK you can get base Nikon (semi cripled) D40 or Cannon Rebel..... maybe wishing for more jst a year down the road....
Or out of the gate go for a Pentax K10D if you can still find one, or a 20D.... maybe a bit more. Extermely capable cameras used by many pros, and at near entry of C&N level cost far more capable cameras.
You want the LABEL impression of I'm cool like everyone, or actual functionality? (And that might me defined by how much high end clothing you are wearing.... you really needed to pay $50 extra to have their trade mak on you doing advertising too???.... I will wear anyones T-Shirt I get for free.... but DAMN I will pay through the nose to do their advertising.
And why there are only 2 levels of DSLR's with Pentax.... Good and real good. C&N like 5 levels of nonsense, just so they can resell, after your realize you made a mistake but lens invested maybe. you after makiing a silly price decision for be in the cool circle, vs actual functionality.
And is the Pentax K20D the most perfect cam ever made.... NO, but very pro level vs the other 2 choice very $$$$ to go in the C&N world... and the 2 or 3 below you may have already been through one step at a time. And again Petax only does two... very good not bottom line basic... and not ultimate either but VERY good, to the point many pros use the 20D level, and manybe even multiple bodies that on the C%N level would be very costly.

Then again even when sitting for a month very surprised how long the P K10D and 20D batt lasts.... and honestly actually 3 rd party/cheaper higher capacity lasts even bet that OEM battery.
Actually my primary, OEM is the backup. (about 300+ maH better), at less than half the cost.

| Yeah, the 3rd party batteries are definitely the way to go. I bought one for $8 shipped to my door (from an eBay store centered in Hong Kong of all places), and it works fine. Had 2 or 3 of them for my 20D and I got 1500+ shots from 2 in the grip on a regular basis. -- I am the Flying Photog, see my website accordingly named Flyingphotog.com. 3 edits | And BTW... BOTHH are from my 10D.... haven't even touched the 20D OEM batt.
And By the way Kudos to Abes Of Maine.... when I ordered my 20D.... sure they tried to sell me stuff/everything, but when I said I have ALL that just replacing a 10D body.... need NOTHING.... they aquiesed.... and sold it... where as many other places it would have been suddenly unavailable.
And honestly I had missed Ed MCMahon had passed away and though I never watch it noticed TVG channel had a retrospective, but all 3 times I tried to record it it was another MIchael Jackson pice of BS -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| Yeah, I don't order from those types of places after I had my first bad experience with them in 2002. For new stuff it's pretty much Amazon or B&H or Adorama only. -- I am the Flying Photog, see my website accordingly named Flyingphotog.com. User known formerly as zakooldude. |

4 edits | But again ABES did do it (live up to the sale)and many others have spoken well of them as well as B&H I have had good results from new and used, and Amazon,.
though Amazon doesn't really surprise me just being a straight forward discount retail outlet... they wouldn't put up with the BS either.
bUt for instance in NYC B&H is one of the few that won't pull that BS if you won't buy overpriced batts and accs as well. (Let alone likely gray market and one of those accs is actually a 3rd party questionable warranty.... bringing it up tgo US cost, with an actual US manufacture warranty. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West) |

| I would say go for the K10D at that price, but as for the kit 18-55mm lens, $200 is a rip-off price.
If you really want that lens, you shouldn't pay more than $100 for it.
However, if you are willing to plunk down $200 for a lens, there are likely other better choices. -- for all your Linux questions |

| If you want the kit lens, you can pick up a quality used one for $50, maybe $120 tops for a new one. Another cheap one used would be the Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 for maybe $75. $280 or so will get you the Pentax 16-45 f/4. You could probably also pick up the kit 18-55 and 50-200 for less than $300 total. |
